Yes, sounds very much like the problem I experienced. It only happened a couple of times for me though. Might be worth looking around on the UK forums to see if anything is mentioned there. A good holiday task.

Are you not popping the transmission into the lowest gear for hill descents? leaving it in D is asking for trouble - no engine breaking, hard on the brakes etc.
If you have knocked it down to the lowest gear, why would it be trying to change down?
Could be the torque converter locking up too, as mentioned before.
If you read again Barney, I think you'll see I state I was in command shift first....that means 1st gear.....:D
And if it is trying to lock up....why?....program issue maybe?

A mate had his rangie decide to put itself into low range without warning one day.......at 100km/h on the Bell's Line of road. It went bang! but he had a lot of problems with that one.
