Our D2 coiler with OME suspension (40mm lift usually called 2" by most people) running 245/75R16 Wrangler A/T's was an even 600mm to floor level.
As you say that makes the D3 at access mode easy as.

It's apples & oranges - adjustable air suspension vs coils - eas (air) can be lowered(normal height) to improve handling on road or lifted to improve clearance off-road. 2 in lift on coils is always going to be detrimental to on road handling & performance

A quality after market lift kit will improve on road performance markedly.
This was proven by ARB when the NSW Government briefly banned lift kits a few years back.
ARB demonstrated successfully that their lift kits out handled standard suspension systems (not talking about air suspension)
I recently sold a MY14 Ranger Wildtrak which was fitted with an Ironman Pro Foam Cell Lift kit and this improved standard suspension incredibly both on & off road.
Improved springing rates, thickness of springs etc.
I had a 2" lift,235/85 tyres and ACE on my D2,plus a heavy home made roofrack. It set flat on those 360 deg freeway on ramps, never felt interesting at all..Its one thing the D4 cant match is the lack of bodyroll a ACE equiped D2 has.

I have owned my non ACE d2 since new so i can compare that and the lifted version which i moved to. 2 inch lift with Dobo springs and Bilstein shocks is an improvement over stock handling on road. Handles like a slot car compared to any other Land Rover or other big 4wd i have driven or been in.
Cheers
Sorry wasnt clear - same vehicle since new. 14 years old now. I have driven an ACE stocker also. Cheers
The OEM's build their springs and shocks to a price.
The quality aftermarket guys build theirs to a standard, the size difference in the spring thickness is pretty substantial.
The ironman foam cell pro shocks are absolutely huge.
Having said that I would still prefer to be driving down the Hume in a D4 which is ultimately why I sold the Ranger.
The Ranger was empty most of the time & only part time 4 wheel drive.
On a couple of occasions it gave me a bit of a fright when it hit truck ruts full of water at 110km.
No such feeling in the D4 or in my previous D3.
I don't know, many must think they are driving a Ferrari rather than a 2.6 tonne 4x4.
I have found that I can comfortably keep up with D3s and D4s on roads such as the Alpine Way in NSW in my 40MM lifted D2 without ACE.
IMHO any difference in handling only comes to the fore at "SWMBO punch in Thigh " speeds .
To me after coming from a 92 RRC which had roll bars, although I took the rear off to fit a LR tank, and it was "tailly" anyway with it on, I find the D2 ridiculously stiff in roll compared to the RRC and subsequently having more "head toss" and suspension harshness. I am looking to buy a set of detachable front roll bar links when I can get the cash together.
Remember lack of roll does NOT equate to road holding which is a different thing.
