D4 or Grand Cherokee?

Interested to know the difference in fuel economy between the two for the same driving. You hear so many 'claims' of awesome economy from both vehicles.

Very happy with the 'real life' economy from mine.

Thanks for all the reply guys, there are some fantastic info here.
I do intend to take it off road and I do serious four wheel driving every four wheel drive I have owned has always had front and rear diff locks and 35 inch tyres so off road capability is just as important as towing capability. It's only me and the wife and we are expecting g our first child in 2 months so the room factor is not huge on the list.
Hearing all this info is fantastic but also a bit confusing at the same time.
I plan to go and test drive a few disco this week and see how I go.
I regards to the jgc comment I ha e driven the coil version and also air bag version and yes much prefer the air bag version. The coil version didn't impress me that much either.

While this is a LR site and not a general family advice centre if you don't mind I will offer one observation.

You are about to have your first borne, congratulations on that. My point is up until you have a child it is hard to understand how much room their gear takes up when they are being transported and that requirement changes every few months as they grow older. You can always grow into a larger vehicle, where as once a vehicle becomes to small it is just to small and then you end up hating it because it becomes a pain in the arse every time you need to go somewhere.

We do plan to do the Simpson later on this year so I think a disco 4 might be the winner for me. Seems the best way around would be to buy a low km tdv6 3.0 and have it chipped to get the extra ponies.

I have the TDV6 3.0. Im not in any hurry to chip it.It doesnt lack get up and go.

Thats a good point Terry. We have a 20month old and we lasted about 17 months with an old camry sedan. It was fine around town and on road trips to friends or family, but as soon as we went camping it was too small - my parents had to take our porta-cot and and a friend had to take the gazebo. The camry was full with esky and (large) tent and tables, chairs and clothes - the boot barely closed! We didnt take a pram either - it took up almost the whole boot!

We upgraded to a D3 and now everything fits :) very happy!

Note: i have not tried to fit all my gear in a Jeep :p But if you want to take a pram places you will definitely appreciate the lowering suspension :D

The reason for th chip is I need plenty of mumbo when towing. The whole idea of buying this car is to tow my 2.7t boat and still have plenty of power to overtake and keep speed steady up hills
