I use the same method on the tailgate. I find the "sweet-spot" is hand under wiper.

2. Is it normal for the top tailgate section to be so hard to close? I really have to give it a good hard push to latch it properly, verging on slamming it shut. I really haven't been able to find anything online about it, so I just wasn't sure. The manual only mentions an auto-closing ability, but I do not believe this is included in my model.

So I'm hoping people can put my mind at ease, otherwise a discussion to have with the dealer.

Not sure about question 1. but had the same issue with tailgate. They can be adjusted, had the dealer do mine and big improvement, just needs a short firm push to shut. Remember the seals in D4s are the best so doors etc need more than a "pussy" touch to close.
