    Faultless experience?

    Hi All,

Long time lurker just been given the green light from the minister of finance to acquire a TDV6 D4 in the next few months (a big birthday this year). Had our first ever test drive of one this week and all the months of salivating did not disappoint!

My question is have any of you had a faultless ownership experience with your disco as everyone appears to have had some sort of niggling issue and the other half has asked if they're reliable (to which I've of course responded "absolutely")??

What can I realistically expect to pick up in the 70-75k budget I have? New / demo? Looking for purchase around EOFY.

    Cheers

Howdy and a faultless ownership experience is rare for almost any vehicle these days. We have seen plenty of 4WD come through our training and rarely is there not a niggle annoying the owner regardless of age.

Yet our TDV6 has just turned one and we have used it in quite challenging 4WD situations as that is why we purchased it. It has towed our Ultimate camper to some pretty interesting campsites and spend up to 10 hours in one day taking us from Adelaide to Coober Pedy.

First service in December the only niggle we had was the poor/lack of performance of the auto wipers. Dealer found the whole sensor pack was not fitted correctly at the factory. Remedied and now works as we expected.

I can't call this ownership experience anything but very satisfactory

Your budget may be the opportunity to pick up a low km version under warranty which is always a nice place to start. Or you could hang off until the D5 is announced and at that point there may be some early adopters who will have trade-ins around. To better understand this market head to Cars Guide as a reasonable start

One thing I can say for us is the ownership experience after 20 years of Toyota 4WD has been a very positive one. As a 4WD trainer and tour operator I have had to re-learn the off-road driving techniques to get the best from the car which I have so far found great fun with plenty more to learn

The only technical issues with mine, same as Ron.The sensor for the auto wipers/lights was replaced,in my case it was the auto lights playing up,wipers werent much good. All fixed without question.I also required a software upgrade to fix a recurring low battery issue.
Love the vehicle,DO NOT LIKE THE 19" tyre/wheel package.Absolutely useless in soft deep sand as 2 of us just found out up at Horrocks Beach over the last 4 days The only fix is a set of the GOE 18" rims.
Would I buy another D4????? TOMMOROW if I had too

    Touch wood!
Apart from a replacement battery in my RRS, my Disco3 (6 years) followed by my present RRS (4.5 years) have both been faultless, yes they do exist.

I replaced the central locking actuator in my previous Freelander II, it was the only thing in 6 years. It was my Land Rover gateway drug into the D4. My D4 also had a similar intermittent thing and was replaced under warranty, but that's it... touch wood.

If you've got $75K, barter hard and bump up a touch to go new, the warranty and Corporate free servicing sold me when I was in a similar position and considering an older, higher spec model.

Looking forward to seeing what you end up with!

My new D4 should arrive at the dealers tomorrow (ordered September, built 10th November). Currently have a 9 year old D3, (60,000 kms, zero faults at all. Still on original battery and disc pads), and a 5&1/2 year old D4 (110,000 kms, fuel filter and suspension compressor replaced the last week of the extended warranty. Out of warranty costs - alternator, door lock solenoid and battery). Would not drive anything else. Keeping both existing cars.

12 months just up... zero issues. 50% short city errands, 50% towing ~2.3T van. Was a lurker for quite a period... and new to the brand. This forum helped me become comfortable with putting my hard-earned down. Best vehicle ever owned... effortless tourer. Every drive brings the grin!

Faultless is a big call. I can hand on heart though say that in my 7th year of ownership of my D3 which I bought new, I have had less issues than most cars I have owned and I have owned a lot. 90% of any issues I have had have been wear and tear issues which are commensurate with the moderately hard Life I have put the car through.

There are a couple of design faults, the door seals wear through on a regular basis, the electronic hand brake is a stupid design and shouldn't have been put in this vehicle and the design feature that allows the alternator to fail to open circuit and take out half the electrical system with it is pure madness. I have replaced alternator, some hoses and belts, compressor, front wheel bearings and lower control arms, the alternator is poor design but lasted almost 6 years, the rest is wear and tear.

Servicing and maintenance is not cheap, but worth keeping up with.

    All,

Thanks very much for your replies, it gives me comfort when it comes time to pull the trigger. There are currently a few tdv6s advertised that have 10-15k on them that would be in my price range so I'd imagine something like that shouldn't be too hard to find EOFY.

Looking forward to having a steed of my own and joining the community proper!

I've had my D4 HSE from new since November 2013. Only required an adjustment to the brake pedal switch to overcome a hesitation on takeoff. As Andrew said the door seal is a weak spot and I had my driver side replaced at the first service and it's starting to wear again now. I understand that they cost in the region of $100 to $150. I did see it mentioned in a thread a while ago but can't be sure of the cost. Since the first one went I try to avoid sliding into the seat to to try and miss the seal being brushed by my butt. I believe that it's caused by my wallet being in my right hand back pocket of my jeans, which is what I mainly wear these days, rubbing across the seal. Here is a picture of the original seal after 5 months.

    Other than that no problems.

    Martin
