Optimum width for a Stone Stomper on D3/4

This is my Stonestomper screen. Disregard the vehicle height. It is at access height in our garage. I have altered the bar height slightly since, but it is basically as you see it here. I have not widened my LR mudspats yet, but i am looking at the Lexan like material the rally cars use

Stone Stomper has been ordered, but owing to my time constraints I have had to accept a 1800mm bar as it would be at least a fortnight longer to have a wider one manufactured.

Christian was also quick to point out that if I fitted better mud flaps than OEM ones then the issue of the SS not fully covering the vehicles track would be solved.

Mud flaps it is next then - I have already found some very useful threads on here on that topic.

I would be interested to see what mudflaps you get. I put some after market ones which were clones of the originals on but they not that good.

I just did a quick measure of the SS bar I have.

I thought it was 1900 but it is 1800.

I bought this originally for a pajero

I reckon the 1900 bar would be better.
But with good mudflaps you should be ok

Pity Christian does not keep a record of recommended sizes for the various cars.

I have a Stone Stomper fitted to my D4 and AT12.
The bar length is 1800mm. I must admit that I did not realise that this maybe increased to 1900mm when I purchased it.

I have found it very good and saved a lot of stone damage on the AT12 and no broken rear window.

Is it necessary to fix exhaust tip to point gases to ground as recommended by SS?

Fantastic product the SS, the stress relief from not having to worry about losing the rear window is gold. What I noticed after a big trip last year was quite a bit of blackening to the flap from the exhaust pipes, before the next trip in July I am going back to see Christian and get him to put some removable (sacrificial) panels just in front of the exhaust outlet, for example another layer of canvas held in place with studs, velcro or cable ties through eyelets, something simple, just wide enough to take the brunt of the exhaust flow. It will prolong the life of the full width blind.

I purchased a SS prior to a trip up to the tip of Cape York in 2014. Really great device, with no issues/problems.

I just got the standard 1800mm wide version (car end) and don't think there is any issue with it - no damage to trailer, no rocks on top etc etc.

I'm sure it'll be fine, and even better with some decent mudflaps!
