    ODBII Scan Tool

I've just purchased a Discovery 3 SE TDV6 and was contemplating also buying a ODBII Scan Tool to help with any diagnosis of problems if and when they occur. I am a bit of a distance from the nearest LR specialist, so I was thinking that if I can assist by providing any information before I take the vehicle in that would be of benefit to me and the specialist.

I've had a search on the forum and although people do recommend having one, I can't find any information on which one is best and why. I suppose I have the following questions. What is your recommended Scan Tool for the Discovery 3? Do they need to be Land Rover specific? Are the ones on eBay any good?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you look through the Electronic Diagnostics section of the forum?

I don't know D3/4 but there could be something there.

Here's a couple of useful threads to read:

Some of the info is a bit old but if you read through you'll see more up-to-date stuff.

I have a Gap iiD Tool with Bluetooth, as do many others.

The BBS products are also very popular (Faultmate/Nanocom).

Thanks for the links. I am still finding my way around the forum and didn't even think to look in the Electronic Diagnostics section (to be honest, I didn't even know it was there).

There is some good reading in there which will probably confuse me even more!!

Currently there is a group buy of the Nanocom Evolution sponsored by the manufacturer (BBS), -20%. Check out the group buy section.

I use a IOBD2 Mfi BT dongle that plugs into the OBD port and use a bluetooth APP on my iPhone to obtain real-time data while the car is running. I can diagnose and clear faults as well. It's a great tool to have and like yourself, I'm a long drive from the nearest LR dealer so like to be able to do this myself.

Haven't seen this one before. Where did you buy it from?

For the live data, can you stream these temps:
    - engine oil
    - coolant
    - transmission oil
    - exhaust gas

    Scott,

Yes for transmission & coolant but I've not bothered checking engine oil or EGT. While I can confirm that the exhaust has Lambda probes, I don't think there are thermocouples or probes fitted to read EGT and I think that my 2.7L D4 doesn't have an oil temp function however, I could be wrong and will check today when I take the car out.

Bought it off eBay and there is an option for iPhone or Android use. It wasn't too cheap (I consider anything under $100 as cheap on eBay). Search for OBD tools.

BTW....You got me thinking so I've checked the diagnostic manual and it seems that I can read O2 via the Lambda probes as well as catalyst monitoring and evaporative cooler so there are many functions to either use or ignore.

It is good for the relevant real-time stuff like accurate speed, instant fuel consumption, battery, air-intake temp, vehicle travel time, current engine load/capacity, torque etc.... You set this up on your phone via customised gauges and just scroll through the gauges. You can also record a performance test (Acceleration/deceleration and 0-400M time)

Finally, you can set up the OBD2 to slave off maps on your phone and it will record and save the route taken in its history data.

Do you have a link Catman to the one you bought from eBay that shows those live figures?
You using the Torque Pro app as well?
