Resurrecting this at it appears my alternator may have gone - Does anyone know the differences between the diesel and petrol alternators?
from pictures it looks like it's just the connector plug and earth terminal location?

I'm not intending to use a diesel one, just wondering if they use the same internals to see if i can get mine fixed.

    Cheers

    Dan

Thanks Justin. Does it still suffer from similar diode failures? I am trying to find a new rectifier for it but cannot find a part number, and don't have the time to pull my alternator out at present. Mine is still holding in there,at least when the car is on.

Yes, had a " smoker" and groaning with gusto a week ago. Same issues at similar km to the tdv6 unfortunately. I would suggest the same remedy, buy a new Denso one. There are still issues with finding the correct rectifier, and most also suffer from winding shorts, too.

I fitted a new regulator to my V8 petrol alternator last year. $50 from the US via ebay plus postage. Just replaced the whole alternator this week though anyway as it failed again, although this time I suspect the brushes. This time I had to get the car back on the road, which wasn't as urgent last year. You can buy a matching pair of regulator & brushes . Hey Justin, any tips for fixing a broken 3 pin plug to the alternator? I managed to snap the retaining clip off mine and cant see an obvious way of keeping it on there. I couldnt spot any good places to fix a zip tie...

The plug actually is part of the rectifier, not the body of the alternator. You could replace the regulator. Search for "lr3 alternator regulator" on ebay and you'll see what I mean.

You could put a small amount of silicone on the outer of the plug. Just enough to keep it in place but not enough you’ll never get it out again.
