    4.0 V6 alternator

    Hi all.

Does the 4.0 petrol v6 alternator have the same issues as the diesel? As in, I'd the alternator dies, does it completely drain the battery?

Car wouldn't start this morning. No warning, no slow starts. Just nothing but the tick of the relay when you try and start. All the dash lamps worked, the stereo worked, just wouldn't crank.

I jump started it (properly) and it idled fine for 15mins. Turned it off and when i came back no go.

I bought a new battery, and the guy at battery world measured 10.5v on the old battery. It was also bulging a little so i figured it was time for a new one anyway, but im a little stumped as to why it drained so low overnight.

    Cheers

    Dan

If the alternator has gone in the same way the D3, it pretty much kills the battery within minutes, if you put an new battery in it would kill that one too.

    Thanks Andrew.

Thats what im worried about. Are you confirming that its the same alternator and therefore has the same problem? If thats the case, do you know where i can find the thread on the mega fuse mod to stop it happening?

    Cheers

No, I don't know, if it is the same.

If you use the search tool in the bottom left of the screen, the Google aulro search, you should be able to find the fuse thread. But here are a varying opinions about whether it will work.

Hi Dan, you most likely have nothing wrong with your alternator.

    Your problem is that your ( 6 cell ) 12v battery is now a ( 5 cell ) 10.5v battery.

Your battery has dropped a cell and this is not because of any mystery overnight drain, it is an almost instantaneous failure.

The guy at Battery World should have told you your battery has dropped a cell.

Hi again Dan and if your alternator was the problem, your battery would be down to 7v but would be rechargeable.

At 10.5v, it's a dropped cell and the battery is no longer usable.

The bulging battery would also indicate what Tim is saying.Likely to be a short in that cell causing the bulge.Seen lots of it on earthmoving gear, especially if cheap batteries have been installed.
Do Batteryworld use the same employment agency as Supercheap???

Haha the guy was actually really good! Way better than supercheap!

He didnt commit to any diagnosis but did say it had likely dropped a cell, though it would take him until Monday to try and charge it then test.

Thanks Tim and Andy's. I dont know much about batteries and have a basic understanding of electronics. I did figure the alternator was ok as the car ran on a dud battery. Didnt know a battery could drop a cell overnight tho!

Im still a bit concerned about the alternator going south and taking the battery with it. I will have a look at part numbers (if i can find them) but if anyone else knows feel free to comment

    Cheers

    Hi Dan,
I have had three people drop cells this week at work, came into work fine in the morning, lights on etc, come to go home, nothing flat as a fluke. Could well be temperature related......it is summer well at least for another two days.

    Cheers Marty.
