6mm bolt caused idiot a whole day of work

    Gday All,

The Idiot is me - 6mm bolt was from the top of my water pump. Never realised it was from there when I removed the timing cover and not being able to see the bolt hole with the timing belt on I stupidly never searched hard enough for where it belonged. Test driving the car the water pump snapped off.

After much swearing, broken drill bits, broken easy outs, lost skin, and more endless swearing I made a plate out of 10mm steel that I could bolt onto the block where the water pump sits so I could line bore the last hole straight as I started to damage the housing cause the I couldn't drill it straight as the bolt that was still in the hole wouldn't budge. The end result was having to oversize tap it and fit a helicoil.

I can deal with the feeling of realising what a stupid mistake I made , but the thought of the Mrs being able to remind me of why she doesn't have her car to drive is going to haunt me for a very long time , and she will happily remind me of it more than once.

So be warned, even if you think its a small bolt and wont do no harm , take the time to find out where the bastard came from

    Cheers Ean

The worse part is that when I realised the bolt was left over , I pulled the front of the engine back off all the way down to the timing belt as the only bolts I remembered being that small where the one's that hole the oil pump on, but they were all in place and I still never noticed where the bolt belonged. You cant see the top of the water pump with the timing belt on , and wondered of it belonged to a bracket somewhere near the starter motor.

Oh and believe me the housing around the pump is very soft , a good drill bit makes a mess of it very quickly. There is not a lot of meat around the inner bolt hole. The other bottom one near the air con compressor could be drilled right thru the housing if needed as there is a gap behind it where small fingers would be able to fit a nut on the end of a bolt in desperate circumstances.

    Lesson learnt the hard way.

    Hi Ean,
OMG, your poor bugger, all that extra work, never mind the good lady and her lack of transport....... Aluminium can be softer than butter when it comes to drilling. At least you have the satisfaction knowing it is all back together as it should be now.

Changing the EGR valve on my RRS, that is four days of my life I will never get back. One day stripping, changing and rebuilding the remaining three days getting the dipstick tube back in where it should have been.

All fixed now Ean you and your missus will laugh about it in about 20 years time. Well done champ.

    Cheers Marty.

Bloody easy to make mistakes like that,i know they shouldn't happen but they do

In fact, only the liars don't make mistakes.

I recently stretched a wheel nut on the D4

Weird design those nuts, they sort of stretch.

Had the wrong torque wrench, one is in Ft/lbs,the other is in nm.

When i was tightening i thought to myself this seems to be a bit tight, but didn't really think much more about it.

    Luckily i didn't snap off a stud.

I ended up changing all the nuts on the one wheel just in case one of them let go later on.

To be honest , it was the size of the bolt that fooled me, the bolt is 6mm x 20mm and it bolts the water pump about 10mm from where the bolts on the bottom of the timing cover are so the same size so it's very easy to think you are undoing the timing cover.

All said and done , it was a silly mistake but for a water pump that has a drive belt run over 180 degrees on the pully to be held on by 3 x 6mm bolts seems like another head scratching cost saving idea. Put some decent size bolts in it.

You can basically do a timing belt and oil pump change ( except crank bolt ) with a 1/4 inch socket set.

    Cheers Ean
