Well, today we got the engine out of my D3, and I started pulling bits of it that I'll need on the Territory motor. When I removed the inlet pipe to the turbo, what do you think I found? A tightly wadded striped flanelette workshop rag, stuck in the pipe about 50mm from the turbo vanes!!! Seems that someone in the past (before my ownership) has plugged the turbo inlet near the radiator while the cross pipe from the airbox was removed, then FORGOT to remove the rag, and it's been inhaled...!
I wonder if this would account for the crappy economy I've had for forever? The rag was a restriction in flow after all the sensors, so to my way of thinking that would cause the engine to run rich continually, even though the ECU reckoned it was getting the correct flow...

I know of a certain 3L D4 that currently has its throttle manifold stuffed with a rag so a timely reminder to remove it at the appropriate time.

Sounds like me. I decided I needed to change the water pump as I had a small leak. So radiator and such out, bright orange rag put over the turbo inlet. All buttoned up, started and ran for about 30 seconds. Then the upper inlet pipe just collapsed. After much anguish she was trucked over to Roverworks who were very good and found my orange rag for me, just short of the turbo itself. But, the best bit? It wasn't the water pump that was leaking, it was a small hose nearby. Naturally the wife was/is very supportive.

Yep, happened to me as well. There is a grid just short of the turbo which catches/traps anything of size. Using a piece of rag/towel to stop anything inadvertantly dropping into the intake pipe, is dangerous. I recommend the use of a pressure can cap or somesuch to cover the pipe opening. More obvious and difficult to forget about.
In discussions with a tech at the LR agent, this particular incident occurs quite often. It seems it is almost ' rite of passage for the newbies.
I am surprised your vehicle was even running. Mine ran for about a second then refused to start. The unfortunate penny dropped at that point.

Reminds me of when we had one of the Caterpillar V16 gen-sets at Yandi overhauled by the local service agent a few years back. Shortly after bringing it back on line, it went "bang" in a big way.
On investigation it was found that a rag had been left in the sump, and was sucked up into the oil pick-up.![]()

A little off topic..... seems to be what i do.. anyway
I was putting in a new cam in my old red motor v8 many moons ago.
Finished the job to the point carby was on.
Went looking for one particular socket. Cant find it! Not where its supposed to be.
I must have left the damn thing inside the engine.
Manifold off to find said socket....... Not there!!!!
I put it in the wrong draw in my tool box lmfao!
I was that sure i must have left it in the engine i pulled it down to check before checking my tool box properly.![]()
I only wish i could say this is the only time i have done something so stupid, but i cant! I can think of a couple off the top of my head![]()
I would never just loose stuff though. Tools or rags for that matter!
Thats like having left over nuts and bolts when you finish a job. Never good.
