thanks for reply anyway. I'm rather stressed by all of this as I can't afford all these "extras". I simply don't understand how it now has these problems when they were not there beforehand.
Should have been a straightforward new control arms and brakes exercise.
Ok I can live with first CV but now they are saying a second one. Most concerning is what I can only describe as some sort of wind up from the front drivers side wheel that radiates back into the transmission area and you can hear and feel the thump/knock right under the gear lever.
What would cause that effect? Would a crook/broken front inner CV joint cause that?
Must be a few knowledgeable types on here who could advise? :confused:

A CV joint comprises of a set of balls in a cage where the balls slide in tracks. The balls eventually wear the tracks in the spots most used, then jump out of the worn spot when the angle between the 2 halves is unusually sharp, eg as when doing a tight U-turn. The jumping can be quite bad on very worn CVs as the joint momentarily seizes until enough pressure is applied to force the balls out of the worn groove.
Sometimes the ball cage can break which tends to cause quite severe thumping as the balls are forced.

That is what I am experiencing. Would that also radiate back into the transfer box or transmission?

I'm not sure how much would be felt through the drive-line unless very bad. Simply worn-out CVs mostly make a lot of noise but a broken one might bind more and therefore be more readily felt.

I wouldn't expect a cvj to go from silent to binding instantly unless you were doing something extreme at the time. Presumably the workshop didn't take it out rock climbing?

I have no idea what they have done. It went in with serviceable CVs all round, now one has failed and the other from what they have said has also failed.
I am just hoping no other damage has been caused. I don't understand why worn CVs would not be picked up when they pulled them out.
Anyway I will see what happens Tuesday when it goes back in.
Not in the mood for any more dramas. :nazilock:

So the latest is that they replaced one of the inner CVs, why they did not just replace all 4 in one go is beyond me as if one is gone the others will not be far behind.
Picked up the car, seemed to be ok, was driving nicely though yesterday I heard yet another really loud knock in the front end emannating from slightly drivers side but in the middle of the front. If that makes sense ...
It only happens if I am going down say a driveway, over the gutter section and turning left, turn right and no knock. Though having said that I did turn left into my street a bit quick the first time I heard it. Predomininalty (99.99%) it occurs when going down driveway and onto the street, say out of a shopping centre etc. But only turning left.
It is not the wind up and release type of knock of before and I do not feel it radiate through the drive train like before. I'm most ****ed off as it now means more expense and time. :twisted:
Any ideas as to what it could be?

I have a similar knock. On mine it is a worn swaybar bush - not critical but annoying. It could also be the lower steering column.
I havent fixed mine yet so no idea how hard or expensive it is to do. Im guessing that the sway bar bushes would be the easier place to check.

Swaybar bush should not be so bad if I can get to it. I don't feel the knock through the steering wheel which leads me to think it is not the steering rack.
Swaybar bush seems to make sense and thinking it might have fallen out or something if they have been fiddling there. I'll put it up on the car ramps in the monring and get under with a torch for a look see.
