They are held on with some 3M double sided mounting tape. Mounting tape is much stronger than regular double sided tape, and I went for 3M tape, because I know it stays stuck!
The wiring goes through 4x 2mm holes just under an end of each light.

Well I suppose its not a proper job unless something gets done twice.
I have shifted the switch. There is just a fraction too little gap between upper and lower tailgates, causing the switch to be partially operated.
Usually shutting the tailgate wouldn't turn on the lights but sometimes it did.
So to be certain I have moved it and installed a blank grommet to the original position.

Could have got one of those push button switches that has a lower profile but am happy with this option.
Can now also turn on the lights from inside the rear when closed.

I've just finished my extra tailgate lighting project....

Wired into my Traxide 2nd battery kit with a switch in the rear cargo area.

Before (with the standard bulb replaced with an LED bulb)

    After

Plenty bright enough to make dinner on the tailgate now.

Thanks again for the write up Scott.

I used a couple of strips similar to Justin (these: 84 LED Aluminium LED Strip with Switch | Lighting - LED Products | Eco Consumer Products | Ecotech | PRODUCTS | ST3932 | Jaycar Electronics) They're individually switched so we can just turn them on and off when needed - I switch off all the car lights when camping.
I mounted them in my fridge cage (usually when I need the extra light I'm camping and have the fridge in the car) - they fit perfectly inside the cage.
One faces up, reflecting light off the roof and the other across the cargo space. I know, didn't happen without pics - I'll take some and post later.

Well, just 5 months later but I finally took some pics of these light strips. These were taken in the carpark so there is some ambient light so that's why the lights off shot is not completely dark.

No worries. If you do contemplate doing something similar, there are a couple of things I'd do slightly differently, mainly to make it a bit lighter, so drop me a PM or a note on that thread.
