I had a D3 with a LR RAI and now a D4 with a Safari snorkel. With the driver's window up, there is very little noise with either.

The RAI needs the rubber elbow that goes from the inner guard into the airbox, to be sealed. There are a series of holes in the bottom of that section.

As Tombie says, the inner guard has to be cut to install the Safari one. I have photos from my install here: DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - Safari Snorkel Install

Having done it once, I would suggest that you get the Safari install done by someone... anyone but yourself! The scars on my forearms have healed, but the mental scars remain. :D

Well, it happened today, we spotted one with the LR snorkel, and to top it off, in drove one with a Safari snorkel. :D
Yep, happy I'm choosing this one now, looks smart in my opinion, and the Mrs prefers it too, so that's done and dusted. :D

$800 difference for something that is essentially a piece of plastic seems a stretch. Yes there's obviously potential fitment issues etc but still!

$800 is not a lot when you start modifying what can be a $100000 vehicle. I have a Safari Snorkel on mine and it looks as though it is brand new after 11 years. I reckon it looks great too. I had the LR RAI on my Defender, I wouldn't get one again. Safari make the best quality product in my opinion. Looks great too.

Yes, and it doesn't appear to have deteriorated in 6+ years.

I'm a bit confused after reading some comments and a link on here.

Does the genuine Land Rover RAI for D4 My16 still have to be modified or sealed ❓
Or are they sealable for the current models ❓

The LR unit has to be sealed. It has drain holes at the first elbow inside the guard, and the tubing is considered porous.

Does the LR RAI require drilling into the A pillar to attach as I believe is needed with the Safari? Anyone in Sydney do the mod to waterproof this? Any requirements for other breathers - transmission etc?

I do not understand why LR produce a product that is not really fit for purpose i.e. not watertight!

Because they don't want you taking the car deeper than the wading depth it's designed for. There's a whole bunch of other stuff that shouldn't be getting immersed above the wading depth & the rai is only meant to get the intake above the dust level - not allow you to go swimming.

With Safari snorkels (haven't had one for quite a few years) I remember there were drain holes on the inlet head up top, the air would push any rain water down these channels. What I can't remember is if there any drain holes anywhere else in the Safari❓

Also does the genuine Land Rover RAI have the same drain hole/channels principle in the head inlet as the Safari does❓

I'm going to raise (pardon the pun) a question on snorkel performance.
For 20ish years I have been fitting snorkels to my vehicles for the "in case I ever need to cross water" and in that 20ish years I have only ever once come close to benefitting from having it, water across the road that was boarder line level with air filter box.

Most of the time I avoid (deep) water crossings if there is alternative routes.

So that leaves the question of performance if not fitting for submarine encounters.
Yes there is the benefit of less dust when travelling behind vehicles in convoys but that can be overcome by keeping distance between vehicles. So not so much a necessity for this reason.

Is there any benefit of the vehicle sucking more air through a snorkel, I could see that as a possibility with Safaris (camel poking it's head out) style snorkel but does the Land Rover RAI have that same ability or is it more restricted by its good looking swept back design ❓

Nonetheless if fitting the genuine RAI you would still have it sealed water tight for the "just in case" scenario.
