Some D4 questions, contemplating purchase

Hi Babs,

Lots of opinions flying, I'll add mine on tyre size...

I went from a Defender 110 with standard tyres to a D4 with Standard Tyres and in some situations it struggled:
1 - Mud, I needed at least proper all terrain tyres to get through even light mud on inclines. OK, not a size related issue.
2 - Tracks where other solid axle 4wds had dug out wheel ruts (hope that makes sense). Most of the time the rise was large enough to collect normally the exhaust or the front/rear suspension arms. Yes I had/have LLAMS.
3 - Rim scratches - endless rim scratches right on the lip of the rims.
4 - I was too scared to lower pressures on the low profile tyres in sand/mud/generally off road.

Moving to the 265/65r18 ATs (I went BFG KO2's) made a world of difference to the above (came from 255/55r19). They are not a mud tyre, I still touch on the rutted tracks, I still get rim scratches but nothing as bad as I did before and I have no issues lowering pressures (I realise that the difference in sidewall between the 265/60r18 and 265/65r18 is minimal, but everything adds up).

Power wise (I've got the SDV6) I've noticed very little difference in performance and fuel usage, there was a difference though and it was for the worse on both.

I spent about 9 months touring (and daily driving) before the new tyres and 9 months after, that includes long trips and boys weekends and there is no way I am going back to standard size tyres.

I should say in general, that the car in standard guise was still AMAZINGLY capable off road. The grip it could extract from tracks is phenomenal, I just needed a bit more.

I've noticed no change in the acceleration or drive ability of the car, other than its way more comfortable on and off-road with the 265/65r18s, and it's definitely more capable off-road, fuel consumption is wore though, the ko2 are a very heavy tyre with deep tread. I went to Fraser Island on 19" tyres and then a few months later with 18" and the difference was huge, so much easier to drive, more comfortable, just better all round.

And there it is! Thank you Scotty, that was the reassurance I was looking for.

Are you getting any rubbing under wheel arches and did you have to bend back the metal lip under the rear wheel arch that everyone is talking about?

No worries Babs.

I have had zero rubbing under the arches, therefore left everything as is. I even looked again the other day after a few people were saying they were. I do not have rear air though, not sure if that makes a difference to the moulding or how much it protrudes?

Something to think about with the re-map, it requires the ECU to be physically opened on the bench and therefore the change will be known.
This may cause you issues in a warranty situation. Only the older models have had the encryption successfully bypassed for software-only re-map.
To my knowledge this has not yet been achieved for the 3.0L models (Tombie will know this for sure).

I would not consider this until after warranty period and even then I really don't think I'd bother for an SDV6.
I'm not wanting to start an argument about warranty and consumer rights etc .... just point out something to consider.
I would not want the stress of the battle even if I'm in the right.
It would be difficult to argue that an unapproved engine software change has had no impact on the engine/drivetrain related failure or fault (if something happens).

Good point Scott. I'll put the tyres on and see how she goes. Coming from a Defender I will be more than likely happy with the power.

Can anyone tell me what brand/model tyre the D4 MY16 comes out with?

I got the size 255/55-19 just don't know what tyres they are.

Need the info as I want to trade them in when I get the new ones. Cheers.

Mine doesn't have rear air and it rubs very slightly on that seam. There is a small hole worn through the plastic lining after several years of full articulation driving off road or I wouldn't have noticed it.


I haven't noticed any reduction in performance due to the larger tyres. However, I do notice a better ride and since swapping from D697's to K02's the handling is a tiny bit better, probably due to the stiffer side wall. Last year I put the 19's back on to get the last bit of wear out of the old tyres on road. That only lasted a day and I put the 18's back on because it was not as good to drive.


With my 285's the speedo is dead accurate but the odometer is out by the difference between the tyre circumferences. It was 100% accurate with the 255/55R19 tyres.

Bob, thank you. Another reassuring bit of information. :)

I don't think tyre centre is going to want the 19" rims and tyres, so there will be no rebate, Great (not) :(

So looks like it will be costly.

Do these rims and tyres sell on here? Maybe guys running stock sizes want spares or just another set?

Otherwise I'll just have to store them and put them back on if it ever has a warranty issue that could be linked to the bigger tyres. :$
