I don't see it as a question of budget, as more of a question on how do you use the suspension.
If you need to frequently change ride height, then Llams is the way to go. I have Llams, so I am not able to do a comparison to how easy rods are to use, although I have had to use my Llams in a situation where I would not have been able to access rods when I needed the extra height (couldn't open the doors it was that tight), and I would not have pre-set the height via rods as I did not expect to be in that situation.

Babs,you are probably onto it,the early D4 2.7 18" wheels do not fit the front of the SDV6 D4.They do fit the rears if you want to run the 2.7 18" rims as spares,in the event of a front puncture it would mean a double wheel change.

Is this a "given" about anything over 31" tyre not fitting underneath?

Two good options would be the 275/65-18 = 32.07" or a 265/65-18 = 31.5"

A long range tank will be the last thing if ever, I would like to keep spare under vehicle for now, is there anyone who has squeezed a 31.5" or 32" spare underneath?

I think the 31.5 fits IF fairly well deflated,see what the brains trust says.
Gordon has a spreadsheet on his GOE Experience website with tyres that fit and mods needed if you havent seen it.
