Kuda GPS mount

First I attached a mount that had sideways swivel adjustment to the front of the Kuda mount for the Hema HN7.

Then I attached another mount with a bendable arm to the drivers' side of the Kuda mount (forgot to take any photos of this one). This would be for the SensaTyre TPMS head unit. Both brackets are glued to the Kuda mount and bolted using S/S M3 bolts, with 1.5mm thick steel plates cut and attached inside the Kuda mount so that the bolts are not pulling directly on the fibreglass body of the mount during any vibrations etc.

iPhone was already mounted on a dash mount purchased earlier - everything fits together well. No more cables running over / around the dash, and no more suction cups on the windscreen. Radar detector sits on the dash speaker grille in front of the Kuda mount - wiring for this now also runs under the Kuda mount instead of around the edge of the dash under the windscreen.

BMKAL How do you get around the legalities of the radar detector ❓

What one is it and how does it work, I'm very interested to invest in one. Please tell us more.

WA is the only place they are legal I believe.

Nope. Tried but couldn't get it through that way. Cables run up behind the dash panel immediately to the left of the steering column, and then under the top "leather" section of the dash, coming out from there inside the Kuda mount. :D

The panel immediately to the left of the steering column - you can pull it off if you follow the instructions in the workshop manual (have to remove panel immediately below your touch screen and the stereo / clock "fascia" panel to get it all off) - OR - if you slip a screwdriver under the edge of it, you can raise the panel from the main body of the dash enough to slip cables in behind it (this is what I did). Once you get cables up to the dash, it's very easy to push them in under the "leather" top panel of the dash, and then bring them out into the Kuda mount where it hooks over the edge of this panel above your touch screen. ;)

The best way though would be to run cables up through the front speaker enclosure, coming out under the speaker grille directly into the back of the Kuda mount if you can. There is no speaker in there (unless you have the flash top-of-the-line stereo system - it's just an empty space, and there are holes in the bottom of it that you can feed wires down through. I tried feeding a stiff red wire down at various angles for about half an hour, but could not find the bottom end of it, so I gave up and went the other way. In hindsight, it may have been easier to remove the glovebox and go in through that way - I'm pretty sure the "red" wire I was using went down behind the glovebox on at least a couple of attempts.

Obviously, the less cables you run up here the better (as you may want to add more accessories etc in the longer term). As you're fitting a bus inside the Kuda mount, just one decent size pair for positive and negative should be easy to run.

Another thing that I've noticed after driving around town today - the Hema HN7 is pretty useless mounted in this position, as it takes ages to acquire satellite signals and loses them frequently (especially as you turn corners etc). Obviously the fact that it is mounted further back in the vehicle and is now actually under the roof rather than being under the windscreen, plus the fact that the rear mirror housing is directly above the Hema, are obviously obstructing the satellite signals. Might work well in eastern states where I believe there are more satellites available - but over here pretty useless.

So I ordered one of these today (RA50). Have been thinking of getting one for a while anyway, but this morning's experience told me that I now need it. Another thing that needs a cigarette lighter socket to power it and I'm trying to free up the sockets in the vehicle, but I think I've figured out a couple of options on where to put it (inside the vehicle). Just need to have a think about where to mount the external aerial.

Your Hema must have a poor antenna or positioning of it in the unit.
I was playing with the Hema App in my lounge room the other week,it locked onto heaps of sattelites.Perhaps ASIO are watching me.
See how I go tomorrow.
