So how much should I expect to pay for this?
As I understand it, the hub gets replaced as a whole (rather than just replace the bearing)... Plus labour etc.
Has anyone got any previous experience with this - most people I've spoken to say that wheel bearings on D3/4's are not that common...

Front are as you say on a D3 Rob, I assume therefore that the D4 are the same.
Rear bearings can be done on their own (as ours was a few months ago).
LRA R.R.P for a genuine hub assembly is $499.35 + Gst
Labor time is 1.2 hours. - Should give you an idea, Shane. :)
