That would account for the tinny/pinging/rattle just before it faulted into limp mode.

That correlates well with the DTS codes we read, especially the ones I've highlighted:

P140A-00 (2D) Exhaust gas recirculation sensor C - circuit low
P0405-00 (2C) Exhaust gas recirculation sensor A - circuit low
P0196-00 (68) Engine oil temperature sensor circuit range/performance
P1335-00 (28) Exhaust gas recirculation position sensor minimum stop performance
P2288-00 (6C) Injector control pressure too high
P0191-00 (28) Fuel rail pressure sensor range/performance
P151B-00 (6C) Idle speed control - RPM lower than expected
P1563-00 (28) Injection pump control module requesting engine stop

The HPFP ones occured first and the EGR ones followed as a symptom (most recent always at top of list).

The next step is an injector failure followed by engine meltdown. This is one of the main causes of CRD engine failure, having an injector stay open and melt piston/s. Rail pressure at those levels is very damaging.

The engine will give me another 250K of trouble free motoring...:)

That said, hopefully no significant internal damage.

No signs yet.

Good to hear that it wasn't terminal Ralph - even if it did hit the wallet hard. :(

Sorry for the delay in responding as I have been travelling for the last 10 days, thankfully without any incidents like yours.

No warranty.
I purchased privately after having checked and rechecked log books and service history. Previous owner kept and gave me the receipts for trans services as well as HPFP and timing belt changes!

As well as new HPFP, repairer also replaced Engine Oil Temp Sensor I think and upgraded ECM to new software.
All for the bargain price of $2800:(
I think I was just unlucky.
Now to fix the front end which is my fault!

Are you suggesting that injector failure is looming or inevitable or are you just saying that the next step if unchecked was piston burn?

Not being overly familiar with CRD, I hope they are un-related events!:angel:

You should be fine then if it is running ok now. The issue is catastrophic injector damage during the high pressure event/s and even split high pressure fuel lines from pump to rails have been known to occur. The fuel lines are one use only apparently. I replace the 2 from the hpfp to the rails when I fit new pumps. Basically any disturbed fuel lines should be replaced.

Pretty similar price to the steering rack and LCA bushes not long after I got mine.

Managed to pacify the passenger by saying "Well dear that's only 75 cents a day for the next 10 years we own it"! :angel:

Tis a nasty shock not long after purchase though I know.
