Hey Guys, I'd like to install a compressor in the engine bayof my D4 to inflate the tyres, as I'm getting lazy and can't be bothereddigging out the portable compressor from the back of the drawers each time Ineed to re inflate/adjust tyre pressure.
Sorry I know this subject has been done beforebut any advice, suggestions or heads up on mounting and wiring up the compressor in the engine bay, or previous threads on the subject. Any recommendations on a good air compressor to mount. Obviously there is the ARB unit. I did seeon one thread where a member had mounted the compressor inside the black fusebox on the drivers side

I find using the rear Anderson plug with the ARB compressor that comes in its own carry case pretty quick and easy. Opening bonnet and opening battery cover is a bit fiddly/slow, plus reaching to the camper trailer wheels is a stretch and I think needs an extension hose.
However there are a couple of installs that don't require a cover to be opened, just lift the bonnet, which are pretty neat.
Good details in this thread, especially David's in the later pages:

I would be hesitant to mount a compressor under the bonnet. It is hot, dusty and at times wet environment that may not be good for compressor longevity.
I have a small tail off my main battery (the traxide terminal actually) with an Anderson plug and cover, and another Anderson plug in the rear cargo area. I have an Anderson plug on my compressor so I can run it from either end of the vehicle. Running from the front is as quick as lifting the bonnet and plugging the compressor straight in, no battery cover to wrestle with.
Hi Chris,
No wrestling with the battery cover at all for my setup (in the thread Scott has referenced above-http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-4/225848-arb-cmk-compressor-traxide-setup-5.html#post2576939 ) as the switch and air outlet are outside the box and the compressor is happily tucked away in the battery box.
I used to have the Anderson plug setup but I do like it this way this as I don't have to store or pull out the compressor- just the hose etc. which is much lighter and more compact. Each to his own of course...
Cheers,
David

Firstly, thank you all for your comments, suggestions and sharing your experience ( plus the link Scott provided ). The main reason Ilooked at installing a ARB compressor in the drivers side battery box was I don't have to store or pull out the compressor- just the hose etc. which is much lighter and more compact ( as David mentioned ). But I guess you still have to lift the bonnet to access the compressor and carry enough hose to reach down the back - especially if you have a trailer with you. Also I may want to keep the drivers side battery box clear in case I want to install a second battery later on.
For the time being while i work out what I really need, I may just get an Anderson plug fitted to the trailer plug area and I can store the compressor in the back between my drawers and the compartment sides. Then all I have to do is connect the air hose and the compressor Anderson plug to the rear Anderson plug and way we go ( only having to open the tailgate). The compressor is stored permanently in the back and requiring less air hose if i have a trailer, and also I can use the Anderson plug at the rear for other purposes. That's the plan at this stage - lets see how we go
I've seen this, with the hose clipped to the underside of the bonnet.

I would never have something that flexible rattling around under the bonnet.. on corrugations it's asking for trouble/wear on some component...
And for compressor longevity, it needs cool clean air, and the cooler the operating environment the less likely to trip the thermal cut out... engine bays aren't good for this - and the enclosed battery box even worse.
I've had fixed compressors in several vehicles and would only fit them at the rear now.. shielded from mud etc and plumbed to a fitting... (Lara had a box where Alien has put his side locker). With ample air flow and a relatively cool location...
In a D3/4 you could find that space in the LHS quarter panel...
Next week I intend on installing the Traxide DBS (drivers side box) and ARB compressor. I am installing the compressor in front of the main battery. The mounting bracket will be a little tricky to fabricate, but I'll make a few light gauge templates before fabricating the final plate, using the two existing nutserts in front of main battery and two screws that hold the washer bottle and PAS reservoirs. I will be plumbing a fixed air line to an external outlet at the rear of the vehicle somewhere, as well as the switch, mounted somewhere on the left cargo trim, running an extra multicore cable when I install the Traxide rear cabling for this switch and spare cores for dash located switches to control future rear mounted lighting or other accessories. I need to find a dash light feed to tap into for the switch illumination? Hoping to find this on Topix.
