What was impeding lubrication to the shaft and TC gear? It does sound like a lack of lubrication issue - but I have little intel on trannys.

Only greased prior to fitting the transfer case...

It sounds as though the noise has nothing to do with the oil change but could be the torque converter or the flex plate disintegrating.

If its a TC diagnosis is it worth just replacing TC? Depends on how much damage is in there I assume.

Well the tranny needs to be rebuilt. The TC was likened to a squashed tomato which is an interesting analogy. It's being done in Melbourne at an indy trannie specialist and will come in at 4.5k :(

That said I purchased the car for 11k with 250k on the clock so I effectively have a TDV6 D3 with a rebuilt auto for about 16k.
