Thanks for all the replies everyone. @Fatso if it's common for the original pumps to fail within 20k of belt change out, why don't LR include it on their service schedule? I would have had it replaced had I know and surely so would have my mechanic. Thanks again. MarianneQuote:

Why havent they corrected them under a recall or amended service advisories? I guess because they dont have to. Manufacturers only perform recall repairs when they are forced to due to safety risks. this isnt a safety risk as far as they are concerned, no more so than crank failures, etc.
And as others will advise here on this thread, some apparently specialist land rover mechanics wont alert the car owner either. Best thing to do is stay tuned on this website and the Disco3.co.uk website and familiarise yourself with the known issues.
Good advice vee8auto. Having been a mechanic myself, now retired it's a minefield out there where technical information is concerned and the access and sharing of it via technical bulletins from dealerships. I think these websites are a great idea for owners and enthusiasts alike and its how I found them, by researching the answers to particular issues I had via the net. So, like you say, stay tuned to the site on a regular basis, where knowledge can be shared for current problems and those that might come about somewhere up ahead.

There was a change to Oz law in Jan 2011 that embodied the concept of consumer expectation. (Google "Broken but out of warranty ABC" as a starting point). In essence it states that if you fork out serious coin for a piece of kit that you expect to last for a long time then whether or not the item is still under warranty and it fails, you have recourse to the supplier/manufacturer. I used it to my advantage when i bought a $1500 oven in Perth and the digital display failed about 6 months out of warranty. I became aware of the above law change partway thru my protracted negotiations with the supplier and when i quoted the law to them, low and behold i had a new $600 digital display within two days at no cost to me. Not sure if there is a vehicle ombudsman in Oz but you might find that a statutory authority might give you some support. Having said that maybe nine years old is possibly stretching it!!!
I had a similar experience with an induction cooktop that was about a month or so out of warranty. Initially, they tried so sell me the part (about 1/2 cost of what we paid for stove), then realised no stock readily available, then tried to sell me a new one at huge discount. I just kept saying no. Why would I buy an appliance for $1000s to only last 2 years. Any reasonable buy would expect a $3000 stove to last a lot longer than 2 years. It's not of merchantable quality if that's all it lasts. They eventually installed the latest model at no cost.
Apple replaced my iPhone at 20 months of age, free of charge, under that aspect of consumer law, even though they formally only offer 12 months warranty.
