SDV6 primary turbo gasket..body off??

A few months back I was talking with one of Kev's guys (at Rovertech) and he had said he just did both turbos on a D4 with the body on, mostly only cuz it had a lot of accessories on it, as in bullbar, rear tyre carrier/rear metal bumper.

These items do add a lot of hrs to a job, but when a D4 is stock, I can have the body off quicker than most will dick around with it on. It also means the job gets done neater and less chance of things like a gasket failure.

Quite simply, it should be no skin off the owners nose what way a repairer chooses to do the job. To me its what the mechanic feels more comfortable doing.

Daz, I think mine was the first, exactly as you said, because it has every accessory under the sun on it and they were worried that they might cause problems getting the body off. I was also glad to do it this way because it makes things more accessible for future maintenance and I was happy to remove the EGR's.


I can't actually tell any difference, either in performance or fuel consumption, with the EGR's removed, however.

Thats correct, while in theory from a mechanical engineering point of view, economy and power should increase, but as a diesel really doesnt require much Oxygen (as in "air" is not just oxygen) to function, more often than not its quite normal for an apparent no difference.

BUT.... what you now dont have is the exhaust gas mixing with the crankcase ventilation creating that nasty tar like product in the intake. And any built up that was there before will start to clean in as little as 10K of driving, from a engine point of view its just win win.

(and yes this is all but a theoretical discussion as disabling EGR is not a legal practice)

Southerns checked my D4 for the annoying hissing sound today.Nothing loose,no codes generated,no leaks in hoses or the exhaust.
Went to the panelshop,they are highly regarded prestige repairers.The bloke who worked on it had a pretty good look,showed me where all the seals are on the guard confirming that they were all in place.Told me I could book it in for a day in the new year and they will remove the guard to double check.
Now more convinced its a weather seal issue,was very noisy this morning with a cross wind from the right.On the return,heavy headwind,the noise was barley noticeable.The new roofrack was noisy though.It wasn't too bad on the way up.

Andy, it not a Patrol! The doors don't leak air in any conditions!!


After all the time I've had mine and the distances on really rough roads etc the only real source of any funny noise is if the plastic covers on the windscreen pillars get detached by a passing truck and you remove them until you can get new clips.
