Yep, it works completely "off-line". If it is outsie the 3G/4G network it cannot chew up any data. You download the maps which can be 1 - 2 Gb to the device's SD card before you leave.
We used it all the way across the Great Central Road, Savanah Way, up the OTT with no problems showing the maps, current position, recording routes and so on.

As the others have said, you do not need Mobile Cellular coverage, provided you get the right tablet.

I have the IPAD (first generation). For the IPAD with built in GPS receiver, you need to get the Model with BOTH WIFI AND Cellular features. The WIFI only model do NOT have the GPS.

The latest IPAD including the Pro are the same: need both WIFI and Cellular

I bought the HEMA Aus 4WD and Vic Topo maps from Memory-Maps and loaded them onto a PC as well as the IPAD. It works very well. Used it to lead the trip across the Simpson, Flinders etc as well as numerous Vic/NSW High Country trips.

Its not a Navigator like the HN7 etc and does not gives direction. However, it pinpoints where the device is with a cursor/dot and the map or the cursor moves as you travel along to indicate your location.

You can plan ahead and put in waypoints etc. Also records your trip.

GD-4, Have you had the same type of instability LandyAndy has described with the hema app? That is, needing to reinstall, crashing, etc? I'm wondering (hoping) if the Apple version of the app is perhaps more stable than the Android?

I used app on Apple iPad and didn't have a problem.
Found it really useful, nice big screen.
Not as user friendly as I would like.
But the basics OK.
I've just got a Hema HX-1 as a gift so we will see how we go.

Hi

No not at all.

Very stable. In the 5 years that I have it, I think I reinstall it once, cannot remember the reason. Never crashed on any trip, corrugations and all.

BTW I mount it with a triple suction RAM mount, very stable and the IPAD does not vibrate even with bad corrugations

There are still some HX-1 models for sale at BCF stores and maybe elsewhere, (search their website). I bought an ex display model for $400 yesterday versus $750 for the HX-2.

I have had trouble with charging but that seemed to be the battery which I had replaced at Battery World on my HN7. It was a bit weird at first but settled down, but last week I noticed the lead wiggling fault you describe and approximately 3 hours into the trip it died. I have since resurrected it but thought I can't really trust it now so bought the HX-1, which I've wanted for a while now for the bread crumb feature. Hopefully it lasts as long or longer than the 7, as I do quite a bit of dirt road driving on weekends with the corrugations that entails and it does sit high up on the dash in the sun. Having said that the first and last time it played up was 3 to 4 hours into the trips, so the fault might be more to do with internal heating or heat rejection as both those times it failed after dusk.

I think you mean HN7 if that is the case, from the map screen, touch the leaf symbol in the top right hand corner, it goes to a screen with a lot of tiles, and the bottom right hand corner one is to cancel route.
