Stuff like this is embarrassing

Well, having just completed Googs Tk towing almost 1.5t of trailer,, on 20" rims,, I don't really see a problem with them.
My biggest mistake was being in the wrong mode at the wrong time, and without realising, my DSC was still engaged. Tyres were around 25psi, but due to the type of terrain there was no way I was going any lower,,, the rims were almost on the ground at 25 with the weight as it was. I'd go lower on a beach, but not when there's roots and rocks to negotiate.
I did think about reversing again, but didn't have enough room for a run up due to the other guys behind me,,, lucky for me, Ben was there [thumbsupbig]

Most of the dunes I hit at around 35k, and only came unstuck a couple of times after I set the car to the right modes etc.
The D4 is awesomely comfy [biggrin]

I must admit i got very badly stuck on 17" rims......Tyres were at 18psi.

Left DSC on[bigsad]Thats what did it,throttle just died,lost all momentum.[bigsad]

In the middle of nowhere,right on dusk,luckily we had the long handled shovel.Tide was coming up,dropped tyres to 12PSI.No one around.

Pitch black by the time we had her moving.

SWMBO and i were absolutely stuffed,bloody hard work that digging.

My mate with new D4 2016 on 19" got badly bogged twice up at Recent beach holiday. He's coming off an old Landcruiser with no particular 4WD skill or training.

It was me teaching him to turn DSC off and to remember to do this all the time. ( how the heck you are supposed to know this which is instant catastrophe on sand)

As far as he was concerned just dial Sand Mode. He did not even realise you had to raise height.

Without doing GOE training etc and being super keen it's no surprise the average Disco bought for the wife's car gets in trouble when taken out by Dad on the weekend.

I'm intrigued - in what scenario would DSC ever be useful when in 'Sand Mode'? Considering the genius seen elsewhere in the design of these cars, it seems odd this needs to be a two-step process, unless I'm missing something?

The only time I got "concerned bogged" was when I stopped the car and the dreaded DSC came back on unbeknownst to me, damn it! 8psi, digging, extended height and two sets of tracks saved the day, but the water was lapping at me during the process. If only DSC could be hard disabled between restarts.

Ideally then switching to sand mode should disable DSC.
Pity it doesn't.

Funny that we complain on the one hand that the car doesn't allow us more control over its functions and then complain that it doesn't have enough automation!

There is probably some legal reason why they can't disable DSC automatically in sand mode, but who knows?

Haha, very true

Contemplating further, I wonder if it isn't to make sure the car isn't accidentally on the bitumen without DSC as a result of automation. Along the same lines as the "Are you sure you want to empty the trash?" prompts on a computer.

To understand why...

Select Sand Mode on the Black Top while stationary...

(I take NO responsibility for any damage that could potentially occur while testing this - It wont wind up or break a CDL- The vehicle is smarter than that; but it could stress a component if its already weakened)

The real issue is no one reads the vehicle handbook.They think it does everything itself,so all good.
In fact, for all its automation,it has more buttons to push,and dials to turn, than any other 4WD, at times,for sand driving is a good example.

Compare it to a deefer,all you have to do is select low or high range,and diff lock,and lower tyre pressures.Same for plado.

In the D4,lower tyre pressures,and select low or high range.
Then raise suspension, if needed,select sand mode,or what ever mode you need,turn off DSC,and remember to do that everytime the engine is restarted.
It took me a while to get it all sorted,moving from the D2a.

Then add 19" rims,and a lot of weight to the equation,and it isn't gonna go far in the soft stuff....

You only have to forget about DSC,and its all over.....
