Towing vs. Being over gvm

States can't be abolished because they are older than the Commonwealth which is a federation of states and many people want to reduce, not increase, the power of the Commonwealth so it would be impossible to get the states abolished.
On seats and searbelts it seems clear temporary removal is OK but permanent must be certified.
A question is, what is temporary? Is it defined by time or by whether the alteration can be reinstated back to original?

One example of interstate stupidity - carting 3.4m wide loads from Bris to Perth and back. 4000-odd klms each way, and for 300 of those, you can only do 90kph on the highway, the rest is 100kph.

And yes - the NSW RMS officers have no sense of humour (some say no sense at all)

Same with towing a trailer. In WA is life threatening to tow over 100kph however in the other states it's ok to do 110kph.

All States bar WA ( and the NT ) signed up to the NHVR protocols. Therefore, you would think that all States would agree on them. However, If I load a truck in Qld, and secure the load with 'load restraint curtains', which are perfectly legal under the NHVR scheme, and drive to Victoria, chances are I'll be booked in NSW by the Highway Patrol. Not by the RMS, although they don't like them and will try to find fault elsewhere.

For a long time it was life threatening to drive with a BAC over .05% in Vic, but in NSW and WA you were fine up to .08%.

The minimum safe distance rule is a beaut as well. The MSD between B Doubles is 60 metres, unless you happen to drive on to a Road Train Route, when it suddenly becomes 200 metres, something I only found out when a mate who was travelling with me got booked near Inglewood on the Cunningham Highway, part of the main from Bris to Melb. In Qld the fine was about $300ish. In NSW it's nearer $1400.

I just weighed the middle seat second row, 26.5kg and the 3rd row seats at 36.4kg, a bit of a surprise, I was expecting the 3rd row to be heavier, certainly feels heavier:spudniklifter:

So that's 25 + 26.5 + 25 +36.4 = 119.4kg removing 2nd and 3rd rows, having said that I'd like to weigh the outer 2nd row to get a better idea.

I'm not sure whether it has been brought up before,but if you refer to the car hand book under towing. You will find a little paragraph that says.
When towing the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight can be increased by a maximum of 100kg,provided that the road speed is limited to 100Km/h

I could weigh a 2nd row outer as I've removed one from my D3

I wonder what the front row weigh? There has to be a weight saving there too with all the electrics. :banana:
