I have the LR/Mantec RAI fitted on my 2012 SDV6.
Open windows very low speed: you can hear the cool noise of air getting sucked into the engine.
Open windows cruising speed: loads of noises. Nothing identifiably with the RAI.
Close windows low speed: nothing to notice.
Highway cruise speed (80-180 km/h) minimum increase in noise. Not much in my opinion (also running Cooper ZLT A/T, A-Bar and driving lamps. All increase noise).
Someone argues car loose power. I wouldn't be able to tell.

I've heard that argument about vehicles losing power after fitting an RAI but reckon that would be nothing compared to a blocked filter. Moons ago I worked on remote mine sites and one of the lads used to ride his BMW motor bike to and from site and asked me to have a look (I'm a mech. fitter) and his air filter was totally blocked by dust.
I removed it and blew it out plus cleaned out where the engine had sucked dust in around it but the engine was stuffed. Amazingly BMW replaced the engine as it was still under warranty!!!
These days I carry a spare filter and wouldn't touch one of the oiled types although they may catch more dust. At least with a dry type of filter they can be banged out and most dust removed.
Noise would have to be a minor consideration.

I'd agree with others... not too much difference with the window up.
I had my D4 for about a year before I fitted the snorkel. With the window up, I think the additional wind noise is negligible.
With the window down, I find the loudest noise is the 'suction' noise in the snorkel under acceleration - but it's not terrible.
Definitely not a reason not to get one!
I fitted mine before a trip to Cape York - it gave me peace-of-mind through numerous river crossings, even if most of them were well below the wading depth... (Nolan's Brook definitely wasn't!!! [bigsmile])

I don't think a snorkel helps with dust, because the dust the vehicle generates doesn't get to the standard air intake. If there has been a vehicle in front or one going past - I don't think there is more dust at the level of the standard air intake than there is 1.3 metres higher. So why bother? River crossings is why IMO.
We're disagreeing a bit of recent I'll say before I start lol. So you're right, dust no, but I filled my intake with sand during beach driving recently. Seems when you're at low speed and sand is flying, the side intake sucks up a fair bit of sand. It sat in the bottom of the air box obviously, blocked by the filter, but that's maybe a benefit, albeit marginal. I bought one last month simply to look hardcore hahahaha. Absolutely no other reason other than it looks cool. I'd likely never wade deep enough to really need one, but I can now play that card [emoji23]Quote:

True true. My D4 is a rust bucket after a number of beach outings. Typical things like exhaust but a little has worked through as surface rust on the frame - nothing concerning. There are many nooks and crannies for salty sand to hide in the chassis I can confirm.
I'd not change a thing though. Such an amazing vehicle.
