Air intake for the D4 compressor?

Can anyone tell me where the air intake is for the air compressor? Like others I'm having the 'normal height only' warning which is due to the reserve not filling up at the required speed but before I go to the expense of replacing the compressor i want to rule out any simple things.

I have already taken the compressor apart, checked the desiccant and all this looks ok, still very white. What else should I check first?

It looks like the replacement compressors are about $600, does anyone have a better source?

    thanks, luke

It is behind the passenger side tail light, accessed from inside and quite difficult to get at if you have rear a/c.
    Item 11 in image below.
That cost for replacement compressor sounds about right.

The filter is a poor design because it encourages air to bypass the sponge which means that if your vehicle gets dust inside then so will the compressor eventually.

Thanks Gents. Has anyone fixed the "normal height only" error by clearing this filter or am I really just delaying the inevitable new compressor?

Ive ruled out any air leaks between the compressor and reserve tank.

If you clean out the filter, and repack the desiccant in the dryer (and I'm talking AMK compressor) you may get a couple weeks like I did - and I mean almost 2 weeks to the day, before it really gives up.
