    Help: unreliable upper tailgate latch.

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help.
a few weeks ago, the upper boot latch on my D4 2010 HSE began intermittantly to not open. Often, after say running the car for 10 minutes, it would allow opening again. I had an auto elec have a look and gathered some good info. We (mostly 'he') delved into the area of the actuator for the lower tailgate latch by removing the lower tailgate trim. We found, using multimeters that the signal to the actuator can fluctuate. It was okay a few times (approx 12 volts while pressing either the boot latch button on the upper tailgate OR the boot release button on the remote), then would drop voltage and would fail to engage the actuator. So it seems it's not the actuator (perhaps the control module?) UNLESS anyone can confirm whether the electrics can sense the impending failure of the actuator and decrease signal intermittently perhaps. I have an IID tool which basically recognisies a general electrical failure to the rear tailgate. Occasionally, the car will claim via the dash that the tailgate is open (and prevent locking up the car), even though in actuality it's still closed..
    please advise guys. Cheers.

Problem is almost always the actuator if cable hasn't broken. It's not that expensive so I would simply replace.

I replaced a D4 tailgate actuator a week or so ago. The dealer that supplied the parts told me the sell cables and latches in about equal numbers.

    Thanks guys,
Should I just order the actuator given there was no obvious cable damage at this stage?
How much extra fuss would doing the cable be?
    Cheers,

    Hi,

Given mine is 2010 i'm guessing this is a likely fault on the way. We have
a cargo barrier so getting access if it fails will be real PITA.

Please can we have part number and price guide for replacement research.

    cheers

If it opens intermittently then I'm guessing it's not the cable that has broken.

Mine started playing up and I immediately installed a manual release, which was just a bit string.

I then procrastinated for a while as it worked some/most of the time, but then it failed completely. Luckily I had installed the manual release, which saved me surgically entering the car from the rear.

For what it is worth I think the actuator can be fixed and have posted a thread to show how but it is still unproven.

Problem solved, recommend others skip the auto-elec and try the $80 actuator replacement straight-up.

    Hi,

Do you have part no / sales link please. I'm thinking of doing it as preventative maintenance as have rear cargo barrier and don't want to have a failure on trip.

    cheers

FUG500010 is the part number, sourced from britcar. Cheers
