Recommended Battery 2011 D4

Comparing the time to get back to float charging between a failing calcium battery and a new AGM is not much of a test for battery types. However it's very re-assuring to see float charging after only a short while, that is once the battery monitor connector is making proper contact allowing charging at more than 12.2V!

That is good info Disco, so what was the correct Varta battery/number for Defender that you used?

The CCA is a bit light on though - should be up around 900-950 CCA.

735 CCA may be a little light on for a Discovery, but it will still work quite well, while it is plenty big enough for a Defender. [wink11]

Ok - missed that - as the thread is about Disco 3/4 batteries I just assumed it was a battery for them not a Defender.

Anyhow ............... happy to say that the new Varta is working well. Fitted it a couple of nights ago after work and have been using the vehicle over the weekend. Has never spun over so easily. [thumbsupbig]

I was starting to forget how good the Disco is to drive ............................... my new work vehicle is a HiLux. [bigsad]

My experience may be unusual as the Defender has an 80 watt solar panel on the roof so the battery stays charged.

Checked and the Century battery I have is the one recommended for a 2.4 Puma Defender so that's good.

Fitment Options

I just had a look at a friend's RRS latest model. He showed me the battery which is this tiny thing hidden in the back compartment side panel. Car has smart start feature so it must be working hard. How does that work? Is that what the D5 has?

Hi PD and I think you were looking at the STOP/START battery, not the cranking battery.

The RRS STOP/START system requires a second smaller battery, to maintain the vehicles electronics while the motor is off during a STOP/START event. This battery is located in behind the side panel in the cargo area.

The RRS has a standard sized cranking battery, located under the spare wheel.

BTW, if your mate wants to bypass the STOP/START function, tell him to remove the NEGATIVE ( - ) lead off the small battery and the STOP/START function will no longer operate.
