Need help to find cause of blown fuse

I get a blown fuse for the trailer lights with or without a trailer connected. It's fuse 14 behind passenger glove box - "Trailer side lamp". Indicator and brake lights on trailer work, just not the normal rear lights.

This is very frustrating and I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas what the issue is likely to be or what these soft, office-hands of mine can do to find it?

I briefly inspected the wiring behind the two trailer plugs (difficult to see, I didn't remove the spare wheel) and connections in the rear cargo area and even behind the left rear light - I can't see any wiring damage although my inspection wasa quite brief.

One procedure you can use is to rig a test lamp to take the place of the blown fuse - I use a blown fuse as he plug-in item and wire the test lamp off it.

Insert your device into the location of the fuse that keeps blowing and see what electrical item needs to be disconnected to turn the light off.

Easier to do than to describe

Is it a fuse that only blows when the ignition is turned on ?

Depending on what year model D4, the trailer loom unplugs behind the left light cluster, external to the body (remove the light cluster to access) for early D4s and inside for later ones.

It's a 2007 D3. The fuse blows when I switch the headlights to ON, ignition doesn't even need to be on. Fuse blows even without key in ignition and without any trailer connected.

It has to be in the parking light circuit. Check the globes. I've heard its possible that a globe filament can break and drop across terminals that will cause a short circuit.

Ok I'll look for light filaments, thanks for the suggestion. Is that still likely be a problem if the lights are actually working?
The problam is not with the trailer, the trailer works no problem on another car.
The lights on the D3 are working it's only the trailer light circuit that doesn't work.
Parking lights, indicators for trailer are good too.

Not knowing anything specific about the vehicle wiring, surely the first place to look at is the back of the socket that the trailer plugs into?

I suggest that you remove the left rear light cluster and unplug the trailer harness. It would be good to discover that the fault is in the trailer harness.

I had a previous vehicle that kept blowing a light fuse. Turned out to be the loom from the lights to the tow bar socket had rubbed across the tow bar mount and was shorting out. You're situation seems quite like that. Might be worth looking for potential wires that have the insulation rubbed.

Ok thanks for the ideas. Embarrassingly turns out that a globe in the left rear light of the vehicle is actually NOT working... missus didn't seem to notice when we were checking the trailer lights.

Hopefully this just means that I can find the cause quickly enough. But haven't had too much luck on the new (to me) D3 in its first few weeks! Will look properly this this weekend and I'll keep you posted.
