The body doesn't have to come off to do the rear belt. My D4's body didn't come off for it.
Many thanks everyone, that is great feedback. I am told the car has been fully serviced by LR dealer and was used mostly in the burbs to and from the city.
Major service in June and all belts changed. I cannot see any signs of a brake controller in the photos. The guy was very genuine and honest about everything ( as one expects from someone who drives one :) ) but wanted to ask on the forum before I waste his time.
Having had a heavy duty TC recently fitted to my D2 which has transformed it, I am surprised to hear the same mod is also worth doing on a D4.
As I have got so much great help here can I ask one more question, lower kms 2.7 (say 120k kms) or higher kms 3.0 (say 170,000) ?? Cheers, Matt.
3.0 all the way!
The better TC fitted by ZF when rebuilding supersedes what was fitted to the early 3.0 D4 g/boxes rather than is an alternate HD one.
3.0 if belts have been done. The 2.7 is no slouch, but 3.0 is a big improvement.
Nothing wrong with the 2.7.
The D4 2.7 is different to the D3 2.7,issues have been sorted.
At least it has a dipstick,so no oil level indicater problems, and no second turbo issues[bigwhistle]
Also no inlet manifold cracking.
A BAS power upgrade does it wonders,if you need the extra grunt.
If i was going for a 3.0,i would try and get an 8speed,as that made a massive difference, but may be out of your price range.
Good luck with your purchase.
Service records,by a dealer or an LR indie, are absolutely critical.
Thanks for the feedback, we passed on the 4 with replaced gearbox as the wife doesn't want silver, so will continue search......
I am sure there are plenty of older threads on the differences between the 2.7 and 3.0 which will look up. Amazing how few D4's there are available at the moment, has to be a good thing, going to take our time and try and get it right. Thanks again.
Matt.
Interesting you should say that.
i was looking at the new D5,and the salesman said,if a D4 comes in it is gone in a week, two weeks max. They have a list of people wanting them.
LR Australia actually sold more D4s in the last 12 months of production, than they did any 12 month period before.
On to a good thing they should have stuck to it.
I was a fool, after looking at the D5,i have realised i should have bought one of the last D4s....
Yes, I spent 6 weeks chasing a good D4 - three different dealers had us on their call list, and one car we were interested in went before we could call the dealer back.
The dealers also told me what I had already worked out - that the D5 second and third row seats are less spacious than the D4's. I think that privately they're not that keen on the D5, although they are selling a few.
Interestingly, the car we traded in was kept by the dealer and seems to have sold within a day or so of being listed - there's lots of cars out there but it would appear that a gold-plated service history is a real selling point.
