    2010 D4 for sale - transmission just replaced - should I buy ?

    Hi, first post in the D3 / D4 section as usually spend my life in the D2 as owner of a 2003 D2A, my pride and joy.

    I am looking to buy a D4 for the wife, tight budget and we are looking at the 2009 - 2011, has to be the 3.0L diesel with as good a spec as possible.

    One we are looking at presents great value, 170,000 kms, but has just had a recon transmission put in. Owner seems very genuine, he said warning light came on, took to the dealer whom couldn't find fault, re-set the fault, and a week later the transmission went.

    LR dealer said they do not fix transmissions, so to fit a new one would cost $17k, but contact a ZF transmission specialist who might be able to help. They then fitted a recon transmission for $6,600, it comes with a 50,000 km warranty. Reason for sale is that it is a company car lease which has finished and he is now getting a new one.

    What are thoughts on whether I should continue with this, I have been given the details, A & B Transmissions in Dandenong, and am free to call them to find out more details.

    If the transmission has gone, could there be additional surprises waiting for me down the track - could it be a lemon ? Do D4's have any 'lemons ?"

    Would this still be a prudent buy, or should I pass it up and wait for another one ?

    Hi Matt, A&B are one of the 2 ZF specialists in Melbourne and a few guys here have had auto's rebuilt by them.
    Having a warranty helps so if everything else checks out i wouldn't be concerned about it having a rebuilt trans, does it have or did have a brake controller fitted ? That would be a give away that it may have hard a hard time towing some monstrosity of a van behind it.

    Are ALL service records in order ? Had the auto been seviced (upgrade?) ?

    It's a high km D4. Been there doing that (240k km). Check records for alternator replacement, intake plenum/plastic bit on top of engine - typically drivers side splits, turbine actuator failure. Any of these are likely faults. Alternator aside I've had both. I'm about to replace the alternator myself as a maintenance thing.
    Has the major service been done (belts service?). That's a chassis off at the dealer so is a couple of grand job there.
    Potential for a lot of spend at this point in its life. Haven't mentioned shocks either 2010 D4 for sale - transmission just replaced - should I buy ?
    So would I do it? Yes, but at least you're informed of the risks.

    The ZF-rebuilt transmission is a positive point, not negative. ZF fit an updated torque converter, a new mechatronic with the latest electronic hardware and all other components are replaced if not within new spec.

    D4 with ZF reconditioned transmission sounds like a good buy.

    A&B have a very good reputation from what i have heard for a ZF rebuild
    If this car has had it`s belts done and all the servicing done and what others have said it could be ok but it is your decision at the end of the day .

    My point was only to highlight the risks, not to scare. I love my D4 despite it all.
    And yes, the trans rebuild is awesome. That's my next likely cost.
