My First Disco 4 Experience

We updated from a D2 ES Td5 .
My compromise was any vehicle with low range, hers was seven seats
She thought all Landrovers were to agricultural after driving the D2 for 5 years...

After test driving everything under $40k including prado's, Colorado7, pajero & pajero sport plus more (including Q7 and X5
because maybe I could live without low-range)
finally she agreed to test drive a D4 with extreme prejudice...

Literally within 5 mins of the test drive of the D4 SDV6 3.0 HSE she decided she must have this car!

OK, it seems the consensus is that its better to have the SatNav screen than to not have the SatNav screen because of all of the other integrated functions. Question: which models does this come in or not come in??

The 3.0 litre sounds like the way to go for the extra Oomph!
The 8-speed also seems to get the nod but that propels me into a higher price bracket - will have to play this by ear but sounds like MY13 or newer.

With the HK or Meridian sound system, was this only optioned when you got the SatNav screen or are they mutually exclusive?
Also, can someone tell me the difference between the SDV6 and the TDV6 - is it the 2.7litre versus the 3.0litre??

And also, I found a HSE for sale that has grey leather seats but the rest of the dash and doorcards are the almond white colour - what gives there??

Finally, it seems the 2.7 litre was offered alongside the 3.0litre instead of being replaced by it. Confused!

About the time the 8spd gearbox was available, they changed the TDV6 from the 2.7L to a detuned version of the 3.0L. The difference between the hipo and lowpo is a software tune, so a 3.0L TDV6 can be tuned to match the SDV6.

To add to the confusion, the earlier 2010 (and possibly some 2011) cars with the 3.0L were branded as the "TDV6 3.0L"

One other thing to keep in mind is the 2.7L diesels can run 17" wheels. The 3.0L models are limited to 19" or the compomotive or tuffant 18" rims.

From memory, when the 8 speed came out in 2012/13, the 2.7L TDV6 was dropped in favour of a detuned SDV6 3.0 engine putting out 155kw/520Nm vs original 3.0L with 180kw/600Nm. One of the benefits(?) of the new TDV6’s was they came with the slightly smaller diameter brake discs of the previous 2.7L model which could fit 17” & 18” rims from factory without the need for aftermarket rims. There can be a bit of confusion with the 2009/10 TDV6 D4’s though, as some came with the 3.0L full spec engine instead of the 2.7L. Clear as mud yet!

I picked up a 2010 TDV6 (The 3.0L one with 180kW and 600Nm) SE with 165,000km in good condition and with some major service items (auto flush, timing belt) taken care of for just shy of $40K on the road. My insurance company nominated fair market value at $41K. So I think you'll be looking at around 2010 within your price range.

As a newcomer to LR ownership I was very hesitant about buying from anybody who wasn't a reputable LR specialist. Reading forums like this you come to understand that there are some common failures, some of which can be very expensive to fix if you don't prevent them from occurring. I mean a rebuilt transmission sounds lovely but I don't want to fork out all that money if a reasonably-maintained one will drive 80% as nicely.

umm,not really correct.

All D3/4 2.7L can run 17" OEM rims front and rear.

All 3.0l models cannot run 17" rims,or 18" OEM rims either,although some models can run these OEM(18") on the rear only.

After market 18" rims are available for all 3.0L models.

SDV6 was available with both the 6 and 8 spd. Pretty much comes down to what you can afford. Take them both for a drive and see if the 8spd is high on your list [emoji106] some people prefer the ediff or the Windsor leather.

Or maybe don't otherwise you'll want one! :D

Alright, alright, alright (said in a Mathew McConnaughey voice!!!)....

I think I have narrowed my focus a bit.

Let's put things into categories of importance:
High Importance:
-600Nm torque and 180kW
-Low kilometres (the lower the better obviously)
-Cream/almond leather interior (black is just too hot in QLD)
-LR Towbar fitted (for obvious reasons)
-Towing ability
-Harmon Kardon/Meridian sound system (I just love my music!!)
-Trailer sway control (I tow a LOT!! Can this be had in the MY10 vehicles or only in the MY13 8-speed and later cars??)
-Price (the pockets go only so deep!!)

Medium Importance
-Colour (bronze good, gold good, white good, black bad!!)
-8-speed gearbox (nice to have but if I have to lose 80Nm of torque to get it...)
-SatNav(yes I would like to have it for the integration etc but if I have to go back to a MY10 model its already 7 years out of date)
-Reverse camera (it just makes things easy, and we all like easy!!)
-I like the woodgrain interior - classy!! (but if I have to pay $10k more to get it...)

Low Importance
-Wheel sizes (this machine will rarely, if ever go offroad - standard fitment is perfectly fine)
-Tyre choices (as above - standard fitment is perfectly fine)
-Bull bar, side steps, snorkel et al (don't want 'em, don't need 'em!)
-7 seats (only have two kids, and Plugger rides shotgun a lot!!)

There you have it I guess.

My question to you all is: was there ever a time where there was a crossover point whereby you could get the non-detuned engine AND the 8-speed gearbox??? If not, I'm going back to the MY12 and earlier models I think.

And, to add another layer of complication, someone suggested I look at the L322 or L405 Range Rover.....[bawl]

I seem to recall that when I bought my SDV6 HSE new in November 2013 that the TDV6 was essentially the base model and came with the 3.0 engine but the low power version. The SE and HSE models had the higher power engine. I'm not 100% sure but I think that the SDV6 has twin sequential turbos (that bit I'm sure of) and the TDV6 a single turbo ( might be wrong there though). Mine has an 8 speed box so the answer is yes to both questions. Unfortunately this was the time when JLR changed the models hence the confusion as there was an overlap. My HSE SDV6 is worth about $50K I believe. Best car I've had and am very happy with it. If you're not sure what a particular car is it can be looked up on TOPIX using the VIN. TOPIX is the LR database of all their cars sold. You can get this info without subscribing although you may have to register.
