The steering wheel controls are also used to program the message centre - eg Mph/kmh, headlight on time, l/100 vs mpg etc. So when you loose the standard radio, in addition to the clock you also loose the ability to change the message centre.
However, having said that in the nearly 10 years I have had my car, I set it up when I first got it and have never changed it. If these functions are important, then you just splice in a socket under the dash so the original radio can be plugged into the loom and the new radio disconnected, do the changes to the command centre and then unplug the old radio and replug the new one.
