    Discovery 4 key programming

Hi. I’ve read a on a few threads on here and others and would like to know if anyone has successfully coded a replacement key fob to their Discovery 4 (2014) with any of the tools like nanocom. Many say it can. So I’m keen to know if anyone has actually has pulled it off personally. Dealer and workshop say no and what extrodianary money to do it.
Rather buy a nanocom and get something for my money.

Get a GAP IID tool, it’s a better unit for later vehicles IMO..

    And yes, it’s easy..

i have read up what I can on these and I thought it was a no for programming keys. This would be my first choice as long as it can. I intend to get a tool anyway for remote travel. Local programmer filling my head with rolling codes and saying simply not possible. Mmmmm does my head in.

Here's an extract from the Gap IID Manual. There is also another section for these models "Key programming (VIN locked L319-04, L320-05):"

    Preparation
    • Ensure all keys to be programmed are available.
    • Ensure the vehicle is unlocked
    • All the doors, including the boot, must be closed.
    • It is recommended to sit inside the vehicle with all the doors closed whilst this procedure is
    performed.
    • Regular non-Bluetooth IIDTool, second hardware version: Usage of the PC-based controller
is mandatory. The IIDTool must be connected to the computer until the process is completed.
The option will be displayed on your computer screen. Please consult section 2.8.5 of this user
manual for more details on the PC-based interface. If using a laptop, make sure the battery
charger is connected. Close all programs, disable all automatic updates and screen saver. The
computer does not need to be connected to the internet.
    Instructions
Follow the instructions shown on screen to program the transponders. Once completed, the key fobs
(lock/unlock) will be programmed by following these instructions. When prompted by the tool:
    • Switch the ignition on and then off again within 5 seconds
    • Remove key from the ignition
    • Ensure all doors are closed
Note : The following steps need to be completed within 30 seconds. Do not turn on the ignition until all
    118
    IIDTool
GAP Diagnostic 2016-12-12 All Rights Reserved
    User Manual : Version 30, Firmware V3.0
keys are programmed. If this occurs, the sequence will have to be restarted from the beginning. When
    prompted by the IIDTool:
    • Press and hold the Unlock button on the first key to be programmed. Whilst the button is being
pressed, press the lock button 3 times within 10 seconds.
    • Release both buttons simultaneously.
    • Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all other available keys.
    Add a key (VIN Locked L322-10, L319-10, L320-10, L538, L359 2013+)
This routine is used to add one (1) new key to the vehicle. It will not remove previously programmed
    keys.
    Instructions
An already programmed key is needed to begin the procedure. Instructions will be displayed on screen.
When prompted, press and hold the unlock button of the remote. Pressing the unlock button will be
done a few times in a row to complete all programming steps. The horn will be activated during the
    procedure.
    Note :
    • A used key can be programmed to a vehicle. Once programmed, it will no longer work on the
previous vehicle. The emergency start (dead remote battery) will not work on the new vehicle.
    • Both key models (slim and bigger one) can be programmed on any model and year.

    Martin

    thanks Martin
Halfway through the instructions above is says remove the key from the Ignition. So apologising in advance for my lack of knowledge but clearly the 2014 doesn’t have a key like that but assume the bottom half deals with the later models perhaps. If you have/ buy the ID tool with Bluetooth does this negate the need for connecting to a pc or laptop.
If one purchases the IID tool is it vin locked to your vehicle?

    Tombie
Given all the above is their only one model IID tool to get?

    cheers Steve

    Hi Steve.

    My 2013 D4 doesn't have a key either.

clearly the 2014 doesn’t have a key like that but assume the bottom half deals with the later models perhaps
. My assumption is yes it would but I would need to check with their support to confirm this. Their support people are very responsive. Ask them any question you like and they will advise you accordingly. I did this before I bought mine and was very satisfied with their service. My copy of the manual may not be the latest. This is from their web page. As you will see it clearly says it does but maybe the manual is a bit vague.

    Advanced Programming Functions

    • Vehicle control modules software updates (ECU Re-Flashing*)
    • Exclusive content available (modified firmware etc, see FAQ)
    • Engine tuning, EGR Patching, Speed limiter raising and more (purchased separately***)
    • Key programming (except Range Rover L322 2002-2005)
    • Car Configuration / Personalization (CCF editing, full CCF access upon request)
    • Height Adjustment (front, rear or all)
    • Suspension individual sensor calibration (needed after a repair)
    • Backup of original height and CCF values
    • 3 personalized height profiles

If you have/ buy the ID tool with Bluetooth does this negate the need for connecting to a pc or laptop. I have the Bluetooth version and I only used my pc to do the initial setup etc using software they provide. In daily use, everything is done via the app on my phone.

If one purchases the IID tool is it vin locked to your vehicle? It is VIN locked but can be used for some functions on other cars. The advanced functions (I have pasted in above) can only be done on the VIN car.

Given all the above is their only one model IID tool to get. There is a Bluetooth and a non Bluetooth version.

    Martin

I just submitted a request to GAP support asking about the key issue. I'll let you know what they have to say.

I repeat... I have programmed several keys to later vehicles.. works fine.

Why waste GAPs time on the key...

    Only get the Bluetooth version!

VIN lock does basics on other cars.
You can add multiple VIN licences to the same tool though...

The lack of key is answered in the second section of the instructions where it CLEARLY shows “Add a key (VIN Locked L322-10, L319-10 etc”

This is stating “L319 from MY10” - that’s how they write it..

The top was for 04 -09 models...

    Hi Tombie.

Because I was not certain about it and didn't want to mislead Steve. I read the section concerned and to me it looked more like an addendum to the rest of the text which led me to be unsure about it. I know it says that the app will say what to do but to my mind, given the more copious detail in the previous sections, it was not clear hence the query to GAP. The other thing was that the other sections say "Key Programming" whereas this section says "Add A Key".
