getting front discs skimmed for $50 total fixed it !!
Can the tie rod ends be buggered even if they look ok?
And are the hubs and bearings still coming as a unit?
If they look ok and have no play in them they should be ok.
Front hubs come as a complete assembly.
thought it would be tie rods as well but as I was only getting the shakes under braking it has to be the rotational mass, this means hub bearings or rotors. As my hubs were worn anyway I changed then out and then still had the shimmy, so facing off the rotors solved it.
Don't go cheap on the hubs, buy the Timken ones, they are around 320 each, but if they last you 200,000km that's cheap.
Check Rockauto.com they have them too for the US petrol Disco's. I ordered mine from the UK as I combined it with a few other parts.
You can check tie rods by jacking both wheels off the ground and pulling the tie rods along their long axis. You will feel any looseness immediately. Mine are at 220000km and no play whatsoever.
Thank you, yeah I've just had new wheels and tyres (tuffant steelies and ATs) inc an alignment, and am getting the shimmying when not under brakes, although it is worse when braking...
I'll check the tie rod ends as suggested... 255 000kms would be a good run out of the bearings, too...
