I really don't want to dump the original tyres in top condition and with only 30K on them but we'll be travelling the Gibb RR and Duncan soonish so want something that will take hundreds of kays of sometimes rough dirt.
Pretty much settled on General Grabbers AT3s at around 350 a tyre.....ouch!
Plus I suppose I'll have to pay the tyre bloke 6 bucks each to dump the originals.....
Maybe I'll store them at my daughters (haven't told her yet....) and try to sell them for a few bucks to someone who wants to sell his vehicle with some decent tread on.

My originals were rubbish at 30km so had no concerns dumping for the hankooks
    No one wants the originals

On a previous car I did as you are thinking of doing. I kept them in the garage for. Few years, moving them around and basically they were in the way. Finally go so ****ed off I dumped them.

The hankooks I just dumped still had life but I would probably have had to change them after current trip so thought why not before and have good tyres for the trip, I had to get a new one any way as a second spare.

Good luck with your choice, not easy

I had the same issue, big trip half worn 19 inch Cooper LTZ and no confidence in them making the distance so rather than bin "good " tyres I spent a bit more and got the Tuffant wheels and BFG KO2 for the outback touring and will swop over after the trip.
It is a pain swopping wheels all the time but IMO that is better than compromise when it come to what you use plus when the coopers need replacing I can get a good road tyre so I really do have the best of both worlds

I live in a rural area so getting rid of tyres that are still legal with a bit of life still in them isn't a problem as they are always welcome for use on farm vehicles.
I have gotten 60,000 hard K's out of my Yokohama Geolanders that cost me under $300 each 3 years ago.
Even though they look to have another 20,000K's left on them I have no regrets in "Pensioning" them off as farm tyres and fitting new ones for my trip because I recon I have already got my moneys worth out of them.
IF I do happen to blow a couple of the old tyres in a remote area I will have to pay at least the equivalent of a full set of tyres to replace them and that's IF I can get them, There is also the possibility of damaging the truck due to a blowout using the old tyres to consider as well.
For me personally replacing tyres that are less than 60% and fitting a new set of rubber for a long extended trip is a No Brainer

It was a problem for me too until I got rid of the 2 spare sets for the D1

3 full sets for the D1 and 2 lots of 6 for the D4 were just tooooo many...

Although I have heaps of area to store stuff I can't be bothered storing tyres anymore because when an IF I ever get around to using them they are usually weathered and buggered anyway.
All I keep now is 2x spares for every vehicle and trailer in the shed and these take up quite enough space as it is because unfortunately with the exception of my dingy trailer and box trailer they are Not interchangeable.
I used to have stacks of half worn and 3/4 worn tyres around the place making homes for spiders and snakes not to mention being a general fire hazard, These are now long gone.
Now I just bring the old tyres back from the tyre joint ( saves you heaps on disposal fees) and give them to a farmer I know that makes good use of them
I have always only used AT tyres on my 4WD's and LT tyres on my trailers/vans so I don't have a need to store a complete set of different tyres/wheels to go off roading or town travel as the AT's are quite happy to do both.
