tune them out
Hi brain trust, we have a Discovery 4 MY12 2.7, which has just developed the P045C fault. We live in a smallish regional town where the nearest LR dealer is over 2 hours away. Our Mechanic has gone as far as he can with the diagnostics so now we need to decide whether to drive the two hours to the dealer for more diagnostics or replace the ERG values (both of them). Do we have other choices? Can they be removed or blanked...if so how? If not, could it be something other that the EGR? Any help advice would be appreciated. We live in the snowy mountains and wonder whether the cold and short trips contributed to the fault?

No. Blanking then will cause faults as the vehicle is looking and measuring the volume including that from EGR.
You can have a tune applied that keeps them closed - then the ECU can calculate the gas volume correctly but there’s a catch. They need to be functional when you shut them down.
Yes, short cold trips would have contributed to it occurring. A good long run regularly is necessary on ANY vehicle for longevity.
2 hours hey? Mines 4hr+ each way, and the other dealer of choice is 12hrs each way (did it twice for fun).
The Discovery makes it an armchair ride though.
If you want to go to a dealer, have a search on here to see if someone else has been to the same dealer, there are dealers, and there are dealers....
An Indie maybe a better choice, but you need to do the same, find a good reputable one preferably that does only LR's.
Maybe contact someone on here in your area.
My D4 is similar age and model to yours.Had the EGR's blanked with a tune, never had any issues before they were done though.
Scary, if you listen closely after shutting down, you’ll hear the EGRs still do their cleaning cycle post shut down.
That’s why they need to be functional when tuned out.
Thanks for the quick advice. I trust the local guy, so guess we are up for a repair. The frustrating bit is that we cannot tell which value is the issue, so both need to be replaced. If only one could be replaced i would then consider attempting to research blanking them out. Buying new parts seems to be around the $1500 for both. Does that seem about right?
