I just started using one of these. Does a great job of getting all the oil out. I removed the sump plug after extracting the oil, and only a dribble was left.

Hoky doky. So the fault has gone from once every couple of hundred Ks to several times a day, so I hooked up the low pressure gauges and went for a drive.

Sure, it never sees more than 0.4 bar and mostly hovers about 0.3, but it never budges even when faulting. I see that as conclusive evidence it's not the low pressure system.

Now, I've been watching the pressure and volume valve percentages along with the rail pressure. If I'm watching the iPad I can stop it faulting. Just before it faults it winds the pressure valve open past 50% and it has to stay there for 2 seconds before it faults. As soon as I see it spiking I just get off the pedal and back on again. The sudden drop when I get off the pedal frees up whatever is sticking and it's all good.

I take that as conclusive evidence the fault is in the HPFP ( yeah I know you all said it was months ago ). If I could source a pressure control valve, I'd replace that first just as a test, but they don't seem to be available.

    Tenterhooks!

It's as if someone has ripped the last pages out of a novel.
    How did the saga end?
    Is the wife happy?
    Did you fix the car?
    Did you sell the car?

    Sorry, I missed this post.
I did the HPFP myself last April : Doing the HPFP. Questions.

Life has intervened in a most unpleasant manner, but it hasn't played up since.

Sorry to hear that. Hope all turns out for the best, good luck.
Glad to hear the D3 is no longer a cause of angst, now it is just the usual source of trepidation.

Yes, the Antichrist strikes again. It has no water sensor/drain.
Tied to your previous post that the car had logged water in fuel before you bought it, I would be suspicious that the PO had a serious water event and then ditched the car.

So the HPFP may have been damaged way back.

I did think that originally, but I spent quite a bit of time with the PO and I'd be surprised. He had the car for about 18 months and got rid of it because his wife refused to drive a manual. I got a pretty good rundown on the history of the vehicle from him and the mob he bought it off, and also managed to get access to the the last couple of MOT's from the UK before it got here. I know it'd had done less than 25,000K between when it left the UK and when he sold it to me. In there it had the original owners/importers, an independent workshop who did the replacement engine, LCAs, handbrake module and a few other bits and then the guy I bought it off. So it hadn't seen a lot of K's since the donk was replaced.

This car was/is cursed. It snapped a crank, the replacement motor was second hand of unknown history. The oil pump had a hole drilled in it with a capilliary glued in which had been cut and swaged shut. Parts removed had been improperly refitted, wiring harness not properly secured resulting in the post-cat EGR sensor cable being destroyed by the front drive shaft, exhaust outlet from the turbo was sitting rattling in the top of the cat. Something had been misaligned and 360 degrees of weld had all let go. DPF blocked because the faulty EGR sensor prevented burn-off ... I could go on and on and on.

On top of the work done buy the guys that put the new engine in, I know the PO put at least one new EGR and a new turbo in it in the couple of years he owned it. I did the other EGR not long after I got it.

So, regardless of the reason for the HPFP failure, it's just another "thing" to work through.
