Thread: Tyres again for the D4

Had an excellent run from our D697's over the last 3 years. I'm not interested in how long they last more how they perform on and off bitumen. I don't leave for a trip with less than 50% tread depth so for me its about risk reduction and all round performance. The current set of KO2's are great off bitumen but not particularly happy on the black stuff. Way noisier than the 697's and a lot less capable in the wet. My only reason for trying the KO2's was I got them at an excellent price and our off bitumen duty cycle is an average of 20,000km annually so they work in that sense and I swap back to the 19" Goodyears when home and as they are about stuffed it is going to be a hard call to see what we replace them with

Yeah that seems to be their typical price. I have seen them down into the $250's every now and then though.

Km3s are not coming out in anything that will a discovery without some serious modification unfortunately.

Are you getting your Scorpions blended? My take is that the Verde All Season and ATR are different tyres. Is there a different tyre I haven't seen before.

Verdes look more like a road tyre and the ATR has a slightly more aggressive tread pattern. I had ATRs on my first D4 and loved them at first but they became scary in the wet once worn a bit. The outer tread block support becoming a water jam is the opinion of many.

I honestly wouldn't go there again. Which is a shame, as they were quiet, very direct and firm in their road performance and were surprisingly good in certain off-road conditions. I also took them through Sundown National Park with no issue, which is renown for chewing tyres as the rocks are very sharp.

I'm keen to try Pirelli's replacements for the ATR - the All Terrain Plus. Pirelli list all the improvements over the ATR in their release blurb and seem to have addressed the ATR's short-comings.

All jokes aside … I'd be keen too.

Up to the issues that presented when a bit worn in the wet, I thought they (Scorpion ATR) were a great tyre.

I have 18" LTZs on my GOE wheels for camping and touring so don't really want a heavy tread AT on my 19" road wheels. The initial attraction to the ATR was the fact that they were rated pretty tough and yet had great road manners.

Best I do some reading … my Wranglers are pretty close to stuffed.
