My yellow top just failed as well after about six years of rough roads, which is not too bad.

    Another failed yellow top here...

Started draining from the main battery, dropping to ~12.1v overnight (even after long drives, or having been on the charger the night before)

Went back for some sort of head office charging cycle, worked great again for a few months, then dead. Going though the warranty dance again now... If I can get a warranty replacement, it won't be going back into the car (will flog on gumtree or something). Battery is about 14 months old.

How have the alternatives worked out for people since this thread was started? The SSB HVT50D for example? Have you had any joy in your investigations Drivesafe?

My SSB HVT50D is still going without any issues, but it is only 12 months old. I found Goodchilds in Cockburn Central were the best for price and availability.

I've also got two under bonnet. Running a cheap brand 60l fridge full time. No signs of problems. Early days. But they will be going in my boat next aswell

I have a 2 year old yellow top under the bonnet of my D3 and it is running fine, hooked up to my Traxide system, but I'm curious what makes these SSB batteries "better", other than potentially being more reliable than some Yellow tops.

Significantly cheaper, and proving more reliable than more recent Yellow tops

Agreed. Going on recent yellowtop history across at least 5 people I know of, getting 2 years is good going. No longer worth the premium price in my view. Also the SSB is 60ah versus 55 for the yellowtop.

Yellow top and blue tops seem to be failing too soon. In our case 5 blue tops across 3 trucks gone in @2 years...now on electric fence duty only😐. Got more than 6 years out of a previous US-made yellow tops. ...what's changed?

I bought a blue top light case in July 2017 for my starting battery.

It now shows about 60% on my cheap electronic tester at AFAIR 473 ccaalthough no swelling or leaks
Ironically the cheap Century 100ah deep cycle wet shows 80%.

I had a yellow top about 10 years ago which leaked at the negative terminal .

The bloke who sold me the blue top said not to expect it to last more than 2 years as the quality had gone downhill since the move to Mexico.
    regards PhilipA
