    Tyres - but probably different

    I've searched, but this particular usage doesn't seem to be common for the demographic here

    My theory on tyres is very much like doing a sex tour of asia with cheap condoms, you have a tiny bit of rubber between you and a certain and painful death, so it's worth spending the bucks for quality.
    I have the same theory on Brakes, but it's hard to draw a descriptive parallel.

    The D3 has 19" wheels. It is currently shod with Kumo Solus tyres and they are bloody awful. Road noise is ok (not brilliant). Dry grip is ok (not brilliant). Wet grip is fairly bad, and wet grip with a van on the back has me break out in cold sweats just thinking about it. Done it once, don't want to do it again.

    This car will not see off-road use on these wheels. When the kids are a bit older and we want to play in the dirt, I'll have a second set of wheels with big-boy tyres on. So what I'm after is a recommendation on a quality on-road tyre. 95% of use is my wife (it's her car after all) running around town. It is the quintessential Toorak Tractor and essentially purchased because we needed something with as much boot space as my Volvo wagon that could tow a reasonable van in a refined manner (the Volvo does it, but 900KM in 3rd gear at 3Krpm isn't fun or relaxing) and manage both kids and the dogs with cargo to spare (plus she drove one and fell in love with it, who was I to argue).

    My general go-to brands are (and have always been) Michelin, Pirelli and Yokohama. My local tyre guy tries to sell me Hankook and Kumho, but on the basis of the tyres on the car I'm not at all impressed. We always had Michelin on our D1 and they were flawless.

    So recommendations for a D3 19" road/highway tyre that is quiet & grippy in the dry and wet. It's not a "cost no object" thing, but frankly (1)safety, (2)road noise, (3)everything else.

    The last two tyres of choice for my D3 have been Bridgestone Dueler D697 AT's and recently (last week), Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. The D697's are also fitted to my D1 and have been great on both cars. The AT3W's have been pretty good so far and are better than I thought when I drove in the wet (ie rained in Perth last week and today). There have been a few recent threads on here on D3 and D4 tyres so use the search bar on the bottom of the page and let your fingers do the walking. Apart from the tyres you mentioned, another budget tyre recently talked about is the Monsta range, available online. Good hunting!

    This will be interesting. I personally have no experience with road bias rubber on my vehicles but certainly see the fitness for purpose of good road rubber.

    Brad why wouldn't you go with the standard 19 inch Continentals fitted to D4s at the factory?

    They seem pretty good - quiet, reasonably grippy in all conditions, on my D4, and I just swap the wheels for another set fitted with Maxxis LT tyres when heading off outback.

    Pirelli Scorpion verde all season is what I have on my RRS at the moment. I've only had them 5K but i'm impressed with their performance.
    I thought the V8 would overpower them but have been surprised how good they are. Quiet, smooth and very good grip wet and dry. They are available in your size as well.

    I'll be interested what you think of these. They are at the top of my list ATM. Seem reasonably priced & look good. My tyre-guy is telling me the Hankooks are good value & a great tyre although I feel they look a little ......boring(?).

    My experience with the D697's has been atrocious, but others have liked them. Maybe my expectations for them as a tough AT tyre was ill-conceived as after a couple of trips to the Vic high country i've had to replace 2 and the remainder have concerning side-wall cuts. They also appear to bag out a lot (given the psi) which may explain the damage to sidewalls.

    Same can be said for the standard Goodyear wranglers 19 inch. Mine lasted almost 50,000 km, with about 3mm tread depth left. Changed to the Maxxis as I plan to go more off-road.

    I don't have any experience with other road tyres for the D4 but can say that the Wranglers it came with are good for exclusively on-road use.
    I've had mine back on for the last few months when I've been only driving in the city. I'd forgotten how quiet they are and the handling is good in all conditions,
    keeping in mind that I drive conservatively in the wet so haven't pushed their handling through wet corners etc.
    There may well be better HTs out there in 19" but the Wrangler should be on the list for bitumen-only use IMO.

    Hi Brad;
    I have a D4 but have had really great experience with Michelin Latitude Tour HP 255 55 R19. I'm now on my second set. The first set did 68,oooks including 20,000ks towing a 2.6t 22ft van from Melbourne to Darwin, Broome, Perth and back. They are quiet, comfortable, very grippy in wet & dry and excellent with the van on. Everyone has a tyre guy who is an expert, including me, and mine recommended these over the Pirelli Verde and everything else. Good luck
