D3 front wheel bearing replace.

Yeah Garry, Thats the only way you can get the bearing, as a complete hub assembly. Having a look at it it would be be very hard to separate the hub as it has two halves pressed together. I used hand tools for me as my air rattle gun wouldn't crack the hub nut. Used a Jimmy bar wedged between the wheel nut studs to the ground so there was no pressure going back through the axle to other components while I undid the axle nut. They are on pretty tight. A bit of steel pipe on the end of a breaker bar did the trick.

Can anyone tell me the torque required on the hub bolts?

Its lots , I used a 1' drive torque wrench and its a fair old swing on the bar. I will find my rave disc and check.

There is a good youtube video on changing the hub, very straight forward job.

115nm or 85 ft/lb

Ok thanks - I have now done 160,000km on my original bearings and was considering changing the lot - an expensive job as a precaution.

While the car is just being a runa round I might leave it and replace before the next big trip if it happens. As mentioned, usually there is not a catastrophic failure and you get warning but both front collapsed on my old series 3 on the way home from work without warning - the front right wheel fell off as a result.

think you might be referring to the axle nut Ean ( 350nm :)

From what I have seen they range in price from $100 to $400 depending on what brand you choose.

Yes , you are correct. I didn't read it properly and assumed it was the axle nut.

So that axle nut is 350 nm?

It was reduced to 230Nm
