    D3 front wheel bearing replace.

Hi Guys, Had the orange light come on the other day check brake pads. Had a look at the fronts they were down. Drove to my Indie had a slight twitching of the steering wheel at 110klms asked the boss who drives it most of the time had she noticed the shaking steering wheel of course she said no. Thought I may have thrown a weight. No movement of the wheel under 110. Got new discs and pads for the front went home and started to fit the new pads and discs. Got to the front passenger side took of old disc put new one on tightened up the disc screw when I gave the disc a wipe I felt the disc move. It had about a 3mm movement in the in and out direction, bugger another trip to my Indie for the front hub. Replaced it and went for a drive guess what no more shaking steering wheel. Used the Timkin hub assembly rather than the Chinese equivalent which was half the price. My Indie told me if you use that one you will be back in 12 months for another one. Fairly straightforward job.
    Cheers

Recently replaced my front left with a Timken hub assembly.

    Went very smoothly.

Had heard stories about seized nuts/bolts and blow torches and endless bashing of the hub assembly to get it off. Almost put it me off doing it.
But was not an issues. No blow torches and four decent whacks with a 4lb hammer and it was off. Only hold up was having to drill out the brake rotor retaining screw. Bloody mechanics and their air tools.

How much was the hub assembly? How much for installation?

Did it myself $350 for the hub. When I undid the 4 bolts holding the hub in, it just came out. Had to wack the axle with nut on to protect the thread as it was tight in the hub only a few blows and off it came. Whole job in 1 1/2 hours thats includes jacking the car removing everything and putting it back together I was done by smoko. Yeah my rotor was the same hole was just off. Round file fixed that.

    carry a spare?

One thought in the back of my mind is whether to carry a spare. With previous 4wds I always carried spare bearings, as they were serviceable. And with old style bearings, I found they often deteriorated with frequent river crossings (on my farms, up to 6 crossings a day). With my D3 I wonder how often the sealed bearings fail, and whether it is advisable to carry a spare hub. Any thoughts?

Fantastic timing, thanks all for posting.

Parts arriving today for same job tomorrow. Also went for the Timkin but from Island 4x4. My symptom is balding front left with rest of tyres wearing well and pulling slightly left under brakes. Thought is was the alignment then jacked up wheel and can feel movement when moving wheel top to bottom. Confident its a bearing.

New tyres (Toyo Open Country R/Ts. Was waiting for Nitto Ridge Grapplers but they haven't worked out) this arvo. New hub tomorrow, should feel like a new car.

When I spoke to my Indie he said front left I said how did you know, he said 99% of the time it's the front lhs, he said he does a lot of these and carries quite a few in stock. I too used to carry bearings I still do for the caravan. My last D3 had 240,000 klms on it and never had to replace a bearing. Use to take it off road quite regular maybe the quality of modern bearings is not the same. My latest D3 has only 136,000 and not as much off road. Maybe they have put more roundabouts in where the left front cops all the load, who knows.

I suppose it comes down to space and weight. Bearings aren’t something that would usually stop you in your tracks like an alternator, serpentine belt, coolant hose, etc. So you should be able to get somewhere for repairs. You could do a front hub on the track but not a rear bearing. But of course if you have them you don’t have to wait x days for the hub/bearing to be delivered. So if you have the space why not?
