    2nd hand D4 TD6 or SDV6 ?

    hi all,

I'm looking to buy a used D4 from about 2013 to 2015 ish... about 80'000km is about my price range. I see that the TD6's are about 8k cheaper though for similar km's and year... If I'm planning long term ownership with some touring outback and towing should I avoid the td6 ? Anything else year wise to as far as important updates that might make a better buy? Thanks Jayro

Many will say get the TD and have it mapped to SD spec as it’s only a software map difference.

Does it not cause over heating to trick a Td6 into sdv6.

Also thinking crankshaft issues... any years to watch our for there ? Was it only the 2.7 ?

From what I've read, 2012 onwards is pretty good reliability wise. Just make sure the electric park brake has been and is adjusted every service, otherwise expensive to fix. And change the auto transmission fluid if it hasn't been done. Ensure that Lifeguard is used.
Airbags will need replacement at some stage. Attend to straight away otherwise a compressor will also be required. Replacement of front lower control arm bushes will also be required on what seems to be a regular basis.
Note : all of this from my armchair as I don't own one yet.

    Hi

When I was buying my D4 which is a 2013 model I had a choice of TDV6 or SDV6. The later had the 8 speed gearbox which is much better than the 6 speed TDV6 one. Its more than just the engine - its the gearbox and engine combo that is all important. I think the SDV6 had better fuel economy also. The research I did on the forums pointed to the SDV6 as better all round.

I have an MY14 TDV6 8-speed and I have done plenty of outback touring as well as towing a 2t camper trailer and offroad caravan plus plenty of city commuting. Just clocked up 100,000km last week.
There is no reason to avoid the TDV6. I would be looking at the MY14+ facelift and 8-speed transmission as the main prerequisites, obviously all other things being equal (km's, features, service record, etc). Often the SDV6 is found in the HSE model which has better features/accessories that you may be keen on. Of course the SDV6 is better but there's nothing wrong with the TDV6.

    Cheers,

Hi, I have a 2012 SDV6 HSE, fantastic on the open road, plenty of acceleration, however the standard fuel tank is a tad too small. (Though i use mine as a daily after hours mechanic wagon, it looks good turning up to ppls places in it and most love it) I have the 6 speed box and I have found it shifts a bit wierd: ie prefers 4th around town and not 5th. Mine has 170k on the clock and it purrs like a kitten.....

    Hi.

I have had a 2013 November build HSE SDV6 from new. The TDV6 was the base model at the time and didn't have the bells and whistles of the SE or HSE. As mentioned earlier the 8 speed is the better gearbox. From previous threads the TDV6 changed from 2.7 to 3.0 around 2013 so be aware of that as it could be reflected in the lower price of a particular car. Plenty of people on here have had the TDV6 versions (usually calling them poverty packs ) and were quite happy with them. Depends on whether you want leather seats, rear aircon etc. or just a good vehicle. The TDV6 and SDV6 badges were a bit confusing around then so you need to look at what the build is rather than the badge itself. If you get the VIN you can find details on TOPIX the LR online site. You can join for free but get only basic info and it is a bit of a pain in the butt to navigate. Every time I go there I have to e-mail them to reset my user as it won't let me in. TOPIX will also show the service history if it has been entered. It will only show scheduled services though so any interim that may have been done won't be there. I get a simple service done at the 6 month mark as I do a lot of short trips - they are not shown.

Finally, do some searches using the AULRO search box at the bottom of the page and you should find plenty of threads that will help and provide info for you.

    Hi there

I used to have a RR vogue but had to come back to a disco. If you can get the SDV6 HSE with 8 speed auto that is the pick. 2014 on.

I needed a tug for an off-road 2.5 tonne caravan. Test drove Toyotas and Discovery 4 in 2016 and read all the reviews. My short list came down to LC200 or D4 but the astronomical pricing for new made me look for 2nd hand. My preference was for D4 because of fuel economy, tighter turning circle, less huge, genuine 7-seater for adults and quietness. I was lucky enough to find a MY2013 D4 SDV6 HSE 8 speed auto and it has been and is a magnificent vehicle. It had done 120,000 km when I bought it and has now done 160,000 km. It has always done everything asked of it with aplomb. I wanted SDV6 rather than TDV6 simply because of the greater torque and power. When towing, more is better and I like a good safety margin.
