why would they do the job properly...
It needs new tires soon so wasn't to concerned with that.
I reckon it would have taken me 7-8 hours to do it myself having never done it before.
It's not the labour that has annoyed me its the obscene parts mark up
If the vehicle is clean and not spent its life on the beach, and i supply all the bearings and seals, (good stuff like timken and corteco) ,then 4 hours and approx $280 in parts incl grease and sealants and consummables.
A little more if early model with railco bushes or ABS Defender are involved due to new top pins required .

Is your mechanic a Land Rover independent or a General all makes garage.....
if the later keep in mind he wouldn’t stock parts and doesn’t have time to shop around you purchase from paddocks and alike or eBay vendors...I’m guessing he would have a couple of wholesalers he deals through, prices are what they are.
I don’t get why he dropped labour and added it to parts.....never heard of that before.
Before changing mechanics maybe work worth him and get an understanding......changing because one little hiccup doesn’t mean the next shop is going to be any better.
LR indie that does nothing else, have been using him for a while but lately the owner is never there and lets his muppets run the show and the last 3 invoices have been somewhat questionable. I think he has forgotten I worked in the industry for 13 years and know my way around cars and suppliers pretty well.

Last job he told me the extra 3 l off diff oil charged was what they had used to "wash out the diffs" yet when I asked the mechanic who worked on the car what the oil condition and magnet was like he looked at me blankly and said they were like new.
I have been recommended 2 other work shops by some very reputable suppliers
Faith restored, my mechanic rang me today, there was a "mistake" made on my invoice and was offered the extra $$ returned to my account or discount on the next job[bigsmile]
Now that was a surprise and reminded me why I use the mechanic I do, honest and upfront workshops are hard to find and I am kind of happy I don't need to try and find another one, yet...[thumbsupbig]
Did he do this off his own back or after you queried the bill? Call me cynical but if he did it after questioning then I’m less impressed as he’s covering his backside. Still, at least you won in the end.Quote:

Do you realise just how much expences have climbed in the last few years??? Our insurances are ridiculous, workers comp premiums are skyrocketing, and EVERYONE is charging more to collect waste oil, coolant, and general waste too. Our rates and water, rent and services have become an all time high. We purchased 28k of diagnostic gear last year, an extra hoist and compressor was replaced, wages were increased and my general sundry running costs are higher every year. I would like people to think long and hard as to why we charge these rates , and remember that mechanics are no longer just points and plugs kinds of people. Training, tools and the minefield of OHS is another added cost burden .Quote:
