    Dreaded spare wheel winch failure

It seems my father's D3 has the common problem of the winch not winding up. I'm thinking of having a crack at repairing it, but was wondering if anyone knows the best place to get another one at a price cheap enough for me not to bother repairing. I see one for sale in the markets, but yet to receive a response.

I recall seeing a post about someone repairing one a while back. May be worth a search in the forum.

When mine got stuck, I was lucky enough to get it untangled by putting a fair bit of tension on the cable whist simultaneously unwinding it. There always needs to be tension on the cable when it is wound up otherwise it birdsnests easily. The unit can be removed, rivets drilled out and opened up but you need a certain kind of rivet to re-assemble it. I have my old one kicking around in the garage which I removed when I fitted my long range tank. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer, as per Murphy's law, I bought one today from another forum member. Not that it was that expensive, though.

It normally stuffs up when I'll informed tyre replacement technicians dont keep tension on the cable when lowering and raiseing the tyre. When lowering the spare you should raise the vehicle to off road height then wind the spare down till it just touches the ground with still tension on the cable. Then lower the vehicle so you have some slack then remove the cable from the wheel. Install in reverse order. If you have someone too help you they can pull at the wheel while it is being lowered so as to keep tension on the cable. If you try to wind up the cable with no tension on it causes the cable to twist inside the unit and roll back on itself causing it to jam the cable. The only way to fix it is to pull it apart and untangle it.
    cheers

I would assume the weight of the wheel is enough to keep the cable taught, seemed fine when i pulled the spare out to have new tyres fitted.

Yesterday I replaced rear air struts on the wife's RRS I had problems lowering the spare wheel for access. I spent more time on the winch than the EAS This was the first time I had used the winch since I checked it when I bought the vehicle 10 years ago. I drilled out the rivets and found the cable near the swaged pin munted. It had been overwound in the payout direction.
Thinking back, I had the park brake servo replaced under warranty, and Im guessing the monkeys at the dealer used a rattle gun to wind out the spare tyre to access the PB servo

Anyway I was able to reform the munted cable and it works OK. Replaced the drilled out rivets with 6mm bolts and gave it a clean and grease. So glad I discovered this in the shed and not on the side of the road.

Does anyone know if a replacement cable is available?
