Im running OEM 19's with MAXXIS AT980's - great on sand / mud / corrugations whatever. I ve had the Cooper ZEONs and also no issues - although with the high treadwear rating (540 or something silly) the rubber gets really hard and they become too slippery in the wet. We do a lot of camping and thats why I went the LT rated MAXXIS....

Still seeing 10.5 on the fuel consumption too.

Wish I had a second set of HTs - definitely the way to go - have to ask Santa nicely I guess...

In May I put a set of Michelin LTX Force 265/60/18 tyres on mine (2013 HSE D4) after receiving a set of 5 Compomotive 18" rims I had ordered from GOE (Gordon, as mentioned elsewhere).

My reason to go 18" were:
1. To get a better choice of tyre.
2. To make the ride more comfortable for my wife.
3. To get a tougher tyre after the OEM tyre split a sidewall by nudging a gutter going through an "S" calming patch early on in ownership.
4. Hopefully to have a better tyre for off road use which in my circumstance is wishful thinking at the moment due to my wife's health.[bigsad]

The reason for the Michelin rather than the usual brands used here was that it had a "cushion guard layer" which as the name implies gives a softer ride which was for me was a major factor. I have done about 1300kms since May and found them very good around town (Sydney). They are very comfortable, handle well in the dry and wet, aren't noisy and from reviews I have read should wear well. They weren't cheap but I am very happy with my decision - fwiw I got the best deal at a Michelin Dealer rather than the usual suspects. Obviously I can't comment on off road use but would expect better results than the OEM Wrangler 19" that came with the car. HT tyres would have been a more logical choice given I drive 95% in the city but I simply wanted a more rugged tyre. Personally, I like the look of them too so that was an added bonus but shouldn't come into the decision but if I'm honest did to a certain degree.[smilebigeye]

I've recently fitted a set of 285/60/18 Toyo Open Country R/T. So far so good. Happy to offer further information if anyone is interested.

There's definitely options for 19", but seeing as he has to buy a set of wheels to replace his 22" wheels, there's no way i'd recommend going to 19". As others have mentioned there's a tonne of tyres choices in 18", plus they're readily available should you need to replace one in a remote area.

Bit of a difference between living with 19's because you have them and spending money to buy them.

Agree with that

The good thing is that 265/60/18 is common on Toyota’s, so outback travel would see that size more likely to be available in an emergency.

Having said that, on a trip in 2016 to Karajini NP (Perth - Exmouth - Karajini - Newman - Meekatharra - Perth) we did a tyre on the sharp stones of the roads in the NP. OEM 19" wheel with Cooper Zeons.

Changed to the spare and in Newman went on the search for a replacement, did not fancy driving 1400km home without one. 1st tyre shop in Newman had at least 2 brand new 19" Hankooks in stock, fitted an balanced right then and there.

I see that 19" tyres are becoming more common. Agree that there are many more tyre choices out there for 18"s.\

Would like to fit the camper out with the same 19"s (requires new stub axles as the stud patterns don't match)

I had a tyre blow out on my D1 several years ago when I was at Karijini. The tyre shop had one tyre (not brand, just one tyre) that fit my car. I thanked my lucky stars!
