Geez we are way off topic now,but i am sure Tombie will have a good read of all this and a great laugh when he returns, which going by has last dissapearence, should be shortly.
When i first met SWMBO,she had a HR,186,with the 2 speed power glide, and discs on the front.Wasnt a bad car, until some bastard stole it,never needed a key to start it as the ignition lock was worn,as they all were.Anyway, the thief didn't get far cos one of the lines to the auto tranny rubbed through, and it stopped
The rear engine seal was shagged,we used to put a tray under it and pour the oil back into the engine....
We got it back, sold it to a mate some years later, replaced it with a HZ wagon, and he was doing about 60k's one day,and a front ball joint broke.
Talk about ****ting yourself.
The thing i didn't like about it was i had a'74, 202 HQ ute at the time,3 on the tree, front discs, had a tall diff,3.08 from memory out of a V8 Torana, the HR would beat me off at the lights.
But the HQ used heaps less fuel, and had a fantastic top speed,it would wind off the speedo.
Hmm,drum brakes,my first work van was a HQ belmont, with a 173,drums all around 3 on the tree.Yer it was fun in the wet
Edit...thinking more about the van,we used to service heaps of milk vats out Rathdowny,Beaudesert way,it was loaded and we would push it real hard, the cross plays would scream on the corners.Worked out a few times,it averaged 12 miles/ gallon☹️
Oh changing gear in the HR wasn't too bad, it was just the fact that ratios were all wrong. First was just way too low for most corners and second would just about stall the car. I generally got it into 2nd, revved the poop out of the engine and fanned the clutch as I tackled turns .... especially roundabouts. Taking the corner faster wasn't an option all the time either ..... besides, it handled like a wet sponge .... LOL.
I just changed the diff ratios, or fit 4 speeds and big rubber to mine![]()
I sold it to a mate who wrote it off a few weeks later. I then bought one of the last models of Mitsubishi Scorpion ….. chalk and cheese really …. LOL!!!

XD,E,And F Fords were the same.
Car thieves just went around with a bunch of keys and tried their luck.
TheHR we had didn’t need a key at all,the ignition lock was that badly worn
We used to put a lock on it that went around the steering wheel and around the brake pedal, but someone forgot to fit it that night.....
Lol reminds me my old f350 same barrel as my xf Ute, the barrel wouldn't turn to start. So I pulled the back off the barrel and zip tied it under the dash, whack the key in the barrel to unlock the steering wheel and start with a screwdriver. Worked a treat except the barrel could spin freely with the key in it, every now and then it would turn and the steering wheel would lock up. I would have to quickly find ignition to unlock the wheel, pretty scary when on the highway or coming up to a roundabout.
Cheers Jim
